End of module summary

Through this lecture and research based module I have experienced a number of techniques and concepts which I will continue to apply throughout the rest of my career. This module proved to embody the reasons why I chose this course in the first place, I knew that theory based learning was the foundation of intelligent and effective design practice. One side of the module which is vital is the historical element. Over the course of weeks I sat through a crash-course on the some of the most significant moments in design in the past one hundred or-so years which helped me to better understand – in essence – what it is to be a graphic designer in 2017. I now know a bit more about the innovations, the struggles and the cultural shifts that have occurred in the past so that I can be more aware of why the creative world is the way it is today.

I have been educated on some important tools that are vital to not only researching more effectively to my academic benefit but also to maintain credibility. This term has not been the first time I have had to familiarise myself with the Harvard standard of citation as I previously took an art and design foundation diploma, which eased me into more consistently researching alongside visual practice. However, recently I have been schooled on the importance of avoiding plagiarism and becoming a more ethical designer. The importance of quotes is also reinforced for me as it provides evidence for readers of my writing so that they can take my work more seriously and also understand my ideas and perspectives better.

For me the connection between this theoretical side of practice and the practical side of things handled in the other module is a no-brainer. One must constantly be looking for visual inspiration from all sorts of sources. To explain my opinion of this metaphorically – the way I see it is as my academic vocabulary expands so does my practical vocabulary. By analysing images of existing work I can come up with more ideas that are more carefully considered and also more diverse. Outside of looking at purely visual ideas, exploring the theories and philosophies of artists and designers can better my understanding of what it is to create and what role I play in the world by creating.

Unsurprisingly to myself, the sources looked at over the past weeks that have resonated with me the most have been the episodes of the Netflix documentary series: ‘Abstract: the art of design’. The fact that learning by watching audio/visual works is the most effective for me is something I have made peace with. Information sticks with me more immediately if it is communicated audibly by people who really care and it certainly helps if the film is entertaining. What specifically has inspired my own practice is seeing others actually working, specifically in episode 6 seeing Paula Scher sketch wherever she goes reinforces the importance of experimentation and iteration to me.

Printed Pages A/W 2015 cover. Original image: Yahnker, E. (2012). Kanye Stack. [coloured pencil on paper].

If this image did not exist physically in the world as it does on the cover of the Autumn/Winter 2015 issue of Printed Pages AKA The It’s Nice That Magazine I would not have chosen it. I like to collect published images in the form of books, albums and magazines as I feel a personal connection with works of design that I myself can own and hold, a sentiment I share with the people behind this magazine: “By name and by nature, Printed Pages has always been a celebration of print”. Outside of being a published image it has a story to tell, one of fame and distortion of perception.

Rozycki, P. and Keates, M. (1993). Charles Bukowski – Women (cover artwork). Virgin Books.

Similarly if I didn’t physically own a copy of the 1993 Virgin Books edition of Charles Bukowski’s 1978 novel, Women, I would not be able to talk about it now. It was a struggle to find an image of it online and the only one I could find is slightly blurred with a level of glare showing up on the glossy cover. It’s a great shame because it’s one of my favourite book covers of all time, that’s why I immediately thought to include it. The bizarre combination of imagery ranging from a scanned photocopy image of a tender embrace between a man and woman rendered through blunt realism and the wild but painterly type helps to evoke some of the feeling that the story is bursting with.

Favre, M. (2017). The New Yorker November 20, 2017 Issue (cover artwork/online animated version).

Seeking out another cover I found something very indicative of the fastly advancing world of publishing supported by technology. Similarly modern was the a New Yorker cover by Christoph Niemann which was featured on the Netflix documentary series: ‘Abstract’ and supplemented by augmented reality technology. The message behind this image that is also supported by the cover story in of the issue has to do with discrimination in the code business and the importance of educating children in an increasingly demanded skill.

What I have learnt

In these ten weeks on Research and communication lecture, I have learnt, researched and explored a lot, my idea towards art has totally changed and improved. I was able to identify how I could improve my work by getting an opportunity to explore different kinds of work by various designers. I have obtained a lot pf inspiration by looking at other successful designer’s work. My favourite tasks included the tasks where we had to write about Counter Culture, Publish or Perish and Technology is the mortal enemy of Graphic Design. Through these tasks I was able to find a deeper sense of the types of design techniques I like working with, which are- Typography, Photo manipulation, minimalistic posters etc. I am very sure that now when I will start working on new projects my thinking and creativity would totally be improved. The presentations and videos shown to us in the class have been proved to be very useful for my area of interest. Before this class, my area of interest was only limited to Graphic Design, but by getting to know about other types of art I feel my knowledge and interests towards other disciplines has increased effectively. The relation between the Research and Communication Skills lecture and the studio based lectures is very strong, because by attending the Research and Communication lectures I was able to give a higher and more creative input in my studio skills. The documentary of Paula Scher shows to us in the class was my favourite one, and after that day, I have and referred that documentary to many of my other friends in Canada who are also Graphic Designers. It was very inspiring to watch the documentary and it gave me a new perspective and a benchmark for what I aim to become in future. I have also improved in the area of writing through this module. Now I am confident in exploring other disciplines as well, as I have gained a lot of knowledge about all the four pathways of Graphic Arts. I have totally realized how influential a design, a photograph or a text can be. Through the use of good design we can influence a large number of audience.

This module has proved to be very beneficial for me, I am very inspired by each lecture providing the opportunity to explore different fields which earlier I was not familiar with. I had no interest in Illustration, but after this module, I have gained a lot of knowledge about this pathway which has made Illustration one of my pathway choice. I am sure that after getting the opportunity to enhance my knowledge in all the four pathways I have become a better designer and my approach towards designing and way of thinking/creating has totally improved.

The first image I chose is one of the best-selling novel in India called- The three mistakes of my life, the story revolves around three friends whose characters are young, ambitious and passionate and have the same moral, social and religious dilemmas as many of the young Indians today. The poster of this novel totally resembles the plot of the novel as it’s cover shows the silhouette image of the three main characters in the novel. In this poster, I like how snippets of the text from the story has been used in a poster, which is giving the poster a very refined look. The placement of text in the bottom is also very balanced with the entire poster. The incorporation of the ball in the poster however seems to be unnecessary. The background is very bright and soothing. Due to the balanced combination of typography in the background, colour selection and character placement the poster of this novel looks very balanced and appealing.

The second poster I chose is a billboard advertisement of Tim Horton’s, which is the most famous coffee brand in Canada, and after brands like Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, YouTube, Visa and Walmart, Tim Horton’s is the eighth most influential brand in Canada. This advertisement clearly shows the reasons why it is the one of the most loved brands in Canada. This poster is a good example of promoting the brand over the audience, as it shows the actual reasons along with a percentage, which proves how influential this brand is. I love the colours used in this advertisement, these are similar to the coffee cup, bags and even the stores of Tim Hortons which use “red” as their main theme colour.

The third image is a minimalist poster of the main character of The Simpsons show- Homer Simpson, this poster uses typography to display the phrases that Homer Simpsons uses the most. I like how the creator was able to use all the famous phrases of Homer and combined them inside the minimalistic portrait of him. The poster has a very appealing look.

Task 12 – Ambition: scale, texture and complexity in practice

The picture shown above is a quick sketch to illustrate my plan of making Hungarian Forints printed over with the face of George Soros taken from the infamous posters made by the Hungarian government to make Soros the boogie man of Hungary.

Continuing my work on the Soros posters made me curious about how further I could develop this project as I could clearly see more potential in this. Keeping the theme of having him present in our every-day life through political propaganda all the time and having him present in any space in Hungary I started to think about where to reuse his “iconic” image. I chose money because it is an object that is similar to advertisements and posters in that it is present in our every-day life. What’s more, we are forced to use money on a daily basis unable to escape it making it similar to the Hungarian government’s aggressive hate campaign in that context.

Having him present on Hungarian currency is especially ironic considering the fact that the government is demonizing him because of his status as an oligarch. By putting his image on Hungarian forints I put him on an imagined pedestal with other Hungarian people such as Count Istvan SzĂ©chenyi who has been presented with the title of The biggest Hungarian of all-time for his generous charities to develop and modernize Hungary in the 19’th century.

Despite all the criticism George Soros is the second biggest benefactor of Hungary till today. Next in line right after Count Széchenyi.

Task 11 – Summarise your blog and reflect on what you have learned from the process

My blog has become a platform for celebrating diversity through art and liberation from alienation through self-representation and encouraging to break out of the boxes through creativity.

My goals are clear. I believe in art’s power to shape society and I also believe in social engagement. I want to urge a shift in social-paradigms and to replace the material and consumerist value with intellectual cultural and personal value.

I want to create an art space that is free of class, race and gender inequality and that is encouraging people to start to think freely and becoming more sensitive to socio-political problems and to start to shape the world around them so that our society can be a more fair place to live in.

Through my work on this blog, I learned valuable skills from the process. It was a nice experience teaching me how to collect materials around me and where to look for information to represent my ideas. I still have a lot to learn through but I became more confident in my skills in collecting ideas and resources and reflecting on them.

Task 10 – Encapsulation: Statements/Presentations/Exhibitions

#Bills #Debts #Waste #Burial #Alienation #Consume #Collect #Own #Beurocracy #Capitalism

Most of my present practice includes collecting materials that usually has no artistic value but are strongly connected to our identity and often tells a very intimate story of who we are.

In a capitalistic state apparatus what we own is often more important what we know or who we are, so the lack of materialistic possessions, lack of money and being indebted is also a very important factor that can play into our alienation burying and suffocating us.

Collecting these materials and rearranging them into art-works offers a very intimate self-representation while also liberating from alienation.

Task 9 – Philosophy and Theory and Politics

Guerilla Girls is an artist-activist group founded in 1985 in New York dedicated to fighting sexism and racism in the art world. The group was made up of anonymous women artists wearing gorilla masks and using pseudo names of deceased women artists namely Kate Hollwitz, Alma Thomas, Rosalba Carriera, Frida Kahlo, Julia de Burgos and Hanna Höch.

The group began in response to the exhibition International Survey of Recent Painting and Sculpture in MoMA. The exhibition claimed to display the era’s top artists from 17 countries but the roster only included 13 women and even fewer people of color and none of them were women. To add salt to the injury Kynaston McShine the show’s curator commented in interviews that “Any artist that wasn’t in the show should rethink ‘his’ career.”

It was started as a protest against the exhibition with little success but they later started to look for other methods for protesting through the use of street art, posters, prints, and actions. The girls naturally gained popularity and gradually became an embraced part of the art world.

The group has a clear feminist agenda and later expanded their focus to include racism as well becoming the self-proclaimed consciousness of the art-world by heavily criticizing its sexism and racism. They started to do projects outside of New York as well enabling them to address sexism and racism internationally too.

Through their work, the girls have witnessed many positive changes and brought attention to the sexism and racism in the art-world on an international scale and influenced a more inclusive approach from the part of curators and art-dealers.

Task 8 – Appropriation

In terms of appropriation, I was mostly interested in the everyday pictures we see on a daily basis like advertisements, posters, and political advertisements and turning them into pieces of art-work.

For my work, I chose the Hungarian government’s propaganda campaign against the Hungarian-born billionaire George Soros. While it might be unheard in the UK, but the figure and especially the face of Soros became kind of iconic or anti-iconic in Hungary due to the current government’s attempt to demonize him through an excessive poster campaign and also trying to shut-down the Central European University founded by Soros in 1992 and passing legalizations to force non-governmental organisations to declare themselves “foreign-funded” making a very xenophobic atmosphere in the country.

The poster campaign includes the face of Soros printed on a poster with a text saying “Let’s not allow Soros to have the last laugh!” The posters themselves are put in metro-stations, or the walls of buildings as giant posters, and even on the floor of busses, metro-trains, and trams often more than one next to each other, just to illustrate how un-subtle this campaign is.

The Hungarian government is targeting Soros because he spent a lot of money on open society foundations and on civil organizations to help reduce the poverty in Hungary and in other post-communist countries in eastern-Europe.

Understandably many Hungarian Jews are upset and find this very anti-semitic mainly because Soros has Jewish roots and the posters are often becoming the targets of Anti-semitic vandalism and graffiti, and the posters on the floors of Budapest trams were deliberately placed so passengers would have to tread on Soros’s face which brings back many disturbing memories in holocaust survivors.

For my work, I took the face of Soros from the posters and printed it on different colored papers influenced by Andy Warhol’s prints of Marilyn Monroe to illustrate how much it pushed into people’s face and everyday life and how un-subtle this campaign is.

Postmodern Images

The first image I chose is a creation by Barbara Kruger, whose work mainly includes things related to consumerism and feminism. All of her work has a true meaning hidden in them. The phrases in her works often include pronouns such as “you”, “your”, “I”, “we”, and “they”, addressing cultural constructions of power, identity, and sexuality. In this case, it directs to consumption. Her works are mainly ethical, social, political, economical and humanistic based. In this particular poster, I like how she has used red, black and white colours. Red is a dominant colour and to promote a message to a large audience, red is a colour that can be very useful. I love how she has combined few images and has created a poster out of it. This particular poster of Barbara Kruger was and is still very famous and popular among audience.

This is the second postmodern image I chose, this has a lot of techniques related to photo manipulation which is one of my favorite areas of design to work with. I like how the creator has used multiple images to create a poster. The background seems to be plain and simple which is totally matching with the objects placed on the foreground. This poster has a variety of colors used in it. The combination of different images used to form a poster in this is totally balanced, which gives the poster a refined look.

This is the third postmodern image I chose, it has a combination of designing techniques like addition of typography, photographs and objects in it. The placement of all the objects seems to be refined. The colors used in this poster give the poster a very bright, colorful and artistic look. In terms of visual mapping, the poster seems to follow the correct visual mapping pattern as the visual mapping starts from the upper right corner and ends smoothly towards the bottom left corner.

This poster could be an example when I create my projects as it has a balanced combination of typography, photographs, colors and other designs.
