Counterculture art

The counterculture art movement started in the 1960’s as a  anti-establishment movement that first started in the United States and the United Kingdom. The counterculture art movement was also used to show the problems with society for work was made for the civil rights movement and for the LGBT community.

The photographer called John Hopkins was heavily involved in the the counterculture movement he took a lot of pictures of male sex workers the pictures have a powerful message because all of the pictures art taken in real locations they are often taken in the flat or apartment. You are also able to see the mans eyes this makes the image a lot more personal this is because if you make eye contact it gives you a personal connection with the person. In his pictures he shows sensibility for the men and their line of work that they are in this shows that way that he try’s to capture the person behind their mask.

The cover of Gandalf's Garden magazine

This piece was from a magizene called Gandalf’s Garden the magizene was ran by a man called Muz Murray this piece shows a man hatching out of an egg. In the description of the image it said  ‘That’s Muz emerging from the cosmic egg.’ This decription is very important because it fits in with a lot of the spiritualism that was present at the time, this is also very well presented because it uses surreal imagery that could be used to show off a spertual message that the more people that accept it the more people will ‘hatch’ and develope as a person.

On Gandalf’s Garden they willImage result for Gandalf’s Garden always will have different cover art in this piece you can see detonator getting to blow up a bain. In the background of the image is a depiction of Jeasus, with the title of mind revolution it makes it sound like they don’t want people to beleave in religion and Gandalf’s Garden looks like they will attempt to start a revolution angenst religion and it’s messages.

Overall the counterculture work is very often effective at communicating a message and it very often helped groups get the right they deserved this is through their creative imagrey and strong message they present.

Task 3

I feel that as technology has progressed it has made design work much better this it because graphic designers will be able to use more advanced technology this allow them to make more complex designs that will be able to capture people attention and imagination even more then before. Some of the technology like this are 3D printers and laser cutter this allows rapid prototyping and final piece production. This will allow designers this to take work further then before because they will have the time to remake pieces and improve them before they are published. In the Manifesto of the Constructivist Group it said “Artist relax with technology”  in the book it is said that that is a bad thing but I feel if we can relax in to new technology then it will be embrace it and used to make successful pieces.

On the other hand technology has taken away from design this is because how quickly pieces can be developed this means that it is easier to get in to design. This means that their will be less originality because their will be so many people designing pieces the industry will become saturated. This will also take the love out of work because you wont be hand making pieces as much because it will take a lot longer to make pieces so it won’t be as efficient.

Overall I feel like technology has taken a personal feel but it allows work to develop at a much faster rate  this is a good thing because it allow people to produce better work with a quicker turn around.

Task 1

The terminal bar is a short movie about the people that went in the terminal bar when it was still open.

The terminal bar is was a bar that catered to lots of different people when it was open and that would constantly change at first it would have a lot of big tough people going their this will also a time when the bar was very popular with gay black men. This film used a very unique style the majority of the imagery from the movie was pictures of the people who frequented the bar. This is a very effective way of of building up the character of the bar and the people who went their. The movie also used a lot of narration to tell the story of terminal bar this is a very good way of telling the stores of people who went their to drink. It is so effective because it would show pictures of them if they were regulars whilst the narrator would tell the audience about what this person was like when they were at the bar. Their are also visual brakes this is normally before intervene segment with the former owner. These visual brakes are very well used because we get to see the amount of different people that went to the bar just from seeing pictures of them. Overall this is a very well produced and put together movie that perfectly mixes visual and audio together to make a movie the tells a very clear plot about the stores of terminal bar.

Task 8

I feel the research and communication is has been very useful for me because of all of the things that I have l learnt from the lectures some of the useful things I feel that I have picked up are the ability to find artist, being able to find work from particular periods of art and design as well as reviewing written work that talks about art and design.

I feel like I have gained some useful skills in my ability to pick out work from designers this will be useful for me because if I need to make a piece of work from now on I will know some useful artist and graphic designers that I can take some inspiration from their work and use it to help develop my own work. This is also useful for when I will need to do artist evaluations if I get give a brief then I will be able to find a reverent artist and will be able to use the skills from research and communication to be able to go in depth about pieces of work that they have as well as their style of working.

I have also picked up the skill of know what period of art history a piece of work came out in this is very useful because before the research and communication lectures i didn’t know the different time periods of the different art movements now that i know all of the different times that these movements happened in I will know what to base my work on if I am told to work is a similar style to one of theses movements.

I have also have strengthened my ability in review the message that a work or book is trying to give off and discuss my interpretation of what the message that the piece is giving off. This will be useful for me because it will allow me to do detailed artist analysis of different artist and the work that they have made, it will also be integral to my own growth as a designer because if i can talk about the message the other people are trying to communicate then i will be able to more effectively communicate messages with my own work. This will also allow me to better enplane the messages that I am trying to communicate when i am reviewing my own work.

Overall I think that all of the researcher and communication work has been very useful for my development this is because I feel like I have developed a better understanding for the way designers and artist work and they way the present their work to convey a message. I need to know how to do this effectively because if I can’t communicate a message effectively then my work won’t be very successful because people wont understand the message so the piece will seem meaningless or pointless because the point of art is to convey a message to somebody

I feel in modern design it is almost impossible to be truly authentic this is because design has been around for so long that if you feel like you have an original piece you will often only a piece this is loosely inspired by somebody else that made a similar piece this is because almost every idea has already been explored at least once so whatever your piece will just be a reinterpretation of an older piece it will just be under a different name and for a different client. Even if the idea is unique it will still have some influences weaver big or small this will not make the piece authentic but it will make it unique. I feel like there are elements of modernism this will still be found in work today and example of this would be photography this is a very key thing for designers because they will be able to use these photographs with their posters this will allow designers to cater the image that they will have to one specific piece of work this opened the door for more designers who make something a lot more physical pieces then they were able to photograph them pieces and make them a part of a collection.

To conclude I feel like it is not possible for an designer to be truly authentic because the amount of work that has been made. But you can create unique work this is only loosely inspired by other peoples work.

Task 7

It is important that people can successful publish their ideas this is because people need to show people what is going on in the world in a creative way which will be able to capture people attention a lot more effectively then words could.

Donald Trump was awarded Time Person of the Year for redrawing American politicsThis piece was produced by time magazine for their Person of the Year edition Donald Trump one this because he was deemed the be the most influence man that year. This is an amazing piece because the way you view Trump will dictate the way you will see this piece if you like him and his policies then you will probably think that the picture make him look like he is a man that is in control. Whereas is you don’t like Trump then you will see that the placement of the M is, in that possession makes it look like devil horns this sends the message that just because you are the most influential man doesn’t mean that you are a good man.

Image result for Shepard FaireyThis piece was made by Shepard Fairey during the 2008 presidential election. This became the biggest poster for Barack Obama’s campaign this piece really connected with people because it is a simple piece with a simple message that is saying that Obama is America’s biggest hope. The piece is well framed with Obama taking up most of the space, the colors work well with the serious look that is on Obama’s face this showing that he is determinant to steer America in the right direction and this piece shows this message perfectly.

Image result for neville brody oceans 12This is a poster advertising the film Ocean’s 12 it was made by Neville Brody this is a very successful poster because it has all of the important information at the top and bottom so nothing distracts from the piece in the middle. The image of the cast of a blacked out cast walking over the number 12 it is so good because the black and red stand out compared to the white background. another good thing is “twelve is the new eleven” is effective because it is easy to remember and it calls back to the previous film.

Overall this work all communicates a message whether it is simply an advertisement or a piece that is made to influence somebody political they all send a message.

Research and Communication 6

Post modern art is a movement that started in the in the 1960’s as a reaction against modern art.

Roy Lichtenstein, ‘Whaam!’ 1963

This is a piece called Whaam! it was created by the artist Roy Lichtenstein this piece was created in a pop art style. Pop art is done in a style where you deconstruct an image so it is as simple as it can be. This is very effective because how simplified this makes the images it make it easily accessible to a much larger audience. The piece Whaam is very well made the choice of colors and the use of the page make it a really striking image that jumps out of the page and grabs the attention of the person that is looking  at the piece.

This piece was made by a group of women called Guerrilla Girls in 1989 this piece was made to reveal the blatant sexism in the art and design community in the 70’s and 80’s. This is a very successful piece because of its use of color and how this makes the words and image stand out this is because of the contrast bettween the black, white and pink words and image on a pale yellow background, this makes the reader pay attention to the message that these women are producing.

Image result for andy warhol work

This piece was made by by Andy Warhol in 1972 this piece is a silk screen portrait to this piece was silkscreen printed in lots of vearations of different color combinations. The piece is based on former Chinese Chairman called Mao Tse Tung this piece is very well made because the colors flow very well together this makes the image because the colour combinations make the piece look very realistic apart from the eyes, because the eyes are yellow it really stands out compared to the rest of the image this shows that Andy Warhol can effectively control what people will be focused on in his work

Overall postmodernism did a lot of good because it showed lots of problems that were in the art and design world at the time it also helped introduce more people to comic art through the Pop art so this was a very good time due to the developments that were made in this time.

Research and communication 2I found the line “Thinking that life will be better in the future is stupid. I have to live now” under the heading: “Things I have learned in my life so far” in my diary. The client graciously agreed to use it on the poster advertising the School of Visual Arts in New York. An entire life cycle of caterpillars and butterflies lives within the twigs. Art Direction: Silas Rhodes; Design: Stefan Sagmeister, Irina Thaler, Paul Rustand.

This is a poster made by the graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister this is a poster saying hoping for a successful future is pointless you need to do something now to be able to ensure that you will have a successful future. This is poster is similar to the type of poster that I would be make when I use graphic design I will often use typography in my work and accompany the type with a background image or working the text around the image. Whereas in this image Stefan Sagmeister has made the text the image in this poster he has done this by making all of the words look like they are all twigs that are growing out of tree branches. This is also different from my work because when I would make a poster I will often use a lack of colour I will normally keep it mostly black and wight with the only colour coming from an image that would be accompanying the image whereas Stefan Sagmeister has colour all over his poster this this to me has the effect of creating posable distractions for people to look at this also could make people look in the wrong place within the poster whereas with a simple poster you will know exactly where to look and this will make it easier to find all of the key information.

I feel that Sagmeister has created a very unique looking poster with the way that he has spaced out all of the different words to fully fill out the space on the page.
