Task 10

Drink                                              Marker

Simple                                            Half stereo

Thin                                                 Sweet

Black and white                            Icy

Creamy                                           Fruit

At the beginning of the painting I tried to translate three-dimensional objects into two-dimensional ones, which was really difficult and let me try many times to succeed. What I drew is a widely acclaimed drink in China, with a unique blend of different teas, milk and fruit. Among them, I would have been three-dimensional ice cubes, fruits, etc. into a flat image, so that has been in the three-dimensional space of the two-dimensional drinks, to be able to clearly see the contents of drinks. This is the first time I tried using a marker pen and it was the first time I tried to create a semi-solid model. The process of using markers was very enjoyable, and I wanted to try out a new, more colorful marker pen work; simple cropping allowed the original two-dimensional work to have a three-dimensional effect, detached from the two-dimensional image, Three-dimensional state also makes me feel very interesting.

Task 9

This is Neel Azevedo’s “Melting Man” in Berlin, a kind of transitory installation art. The iceman in this picture was completed with the help of the author and his helpdesk, because it was not long before it was completely water-filled, unable to be preserved for a long time outdoors and was therefore a temporary installation art. Time and weather were all conditions for his accomplishment of this unique installation art. However, the implication of this is that the impact of the greenhouse effect is getting bigger and bigger. People are paying the price for this and have been widely disseminated and attracted more attention. But in this space, if no one noticed this unique artwork, then the author’s content and existence significance of this work are not complete.

Week 2 Design and Games 101

> What were the key ideas of the Bauhaus?

The Bauhaus movement  believed in combining creativity with manufacturing to produce good design. It saw combining art with as medium to solve problems in manufacturing products. Emphasis on the exploration of design and solving problems in design at the Bauhaus, influenced the way how art should be taught in education, this lead art to be rather be as a research science. Simplicity and affordance were the Bauhaus’s key desires in manufacturing products. They thought that manufactured objects should be able be clear about its purpose.

> Do you feel that the ideas could have an influence on contemporary games design?

I feel that the ideas of Bauhaus certainly can have an influence on designing games. I feel that the idea of simple and efficient design could help create game menus, user interface and assets. Creating affordance in games such as letting an object shine or presenting menus in a grid format and optimizing the experience for the player in an artistic way are definitely traits from the Bauhaus.

task 9/10

Ethics: Duncan Quinn

The photograph of the Duncan Quinn image portrays sexual assault and rape to the woman which appears to be lying dead on top of a luxurious classic car wearing nothing but only her lingerie. The body language of the woman tells me that she in unguarding herself with both her hands helplessly beside her displays surrender and defeat. The man dressed in his expensive looking suit reflects wealth and authority; in the image it shows the man’s tie around the woman’s neck as he carelessly tugs her across the car. the tie represents a sense of ownership as likened to a dog with the leash, or a collar, which leads to the theory of men buying or seducing women as she become an animal in the site of men. This image was photographed at night to ironically portray the sense of darkness with in the image. The man’s fascial expression shows that he is does not care about the woman and her situation but instead he stares bluntly at the camera with no emotion in in his face; this shows that the man treats the woman as an item of ownership and not as person.

Over all I think that Duncan Quinn want this image to represent sexual violence against women and how the wealthy takes advantage of the lesser to participate into sexual activities to earn a living. The image also displays the objectification of human which leaves us with the theory of the man murdering the woman and enjoying it afterwards, as shown through his facial expression, advertising propaganda of male dominance. Another speculation of this photograph is suicide, looking at the image the woman is shown with a tie around her neck and this can also express a form of foreshadow of the woman committing suicide by hanging herself leading to the topic of many young women committing suicide due to rape and sexual harassment. The image also shows many signs of sexist behaviour, starting off with the man in his suit, the photo shows the properly dressed for the occasion while the woman is half naked, this symbolises women as weak and useless following up its stereotype about woman.

Dealing with the ethical issue of this subject is not an easy solution, I believe that at an early age children should be taught to respect and give equal rights to each gender. Men should not see women as weak and vulnerable nor seek them for their physical appearance but instead they should accept the opposing gender and acknowledge their decisions. Although most of society that are sexually abused are women we should also not forget the existence of male rape and abuse. In conclusion we should not allow stereotypes and gender roles to control how to live, for example, men and women should be allowed to take any job at their desire without any label attached and by opening a window such as this will enhance the image of each gender and will prevent many violence and traumatic incidence involving sexual abuse.

Reflective summary

To Conclude

At the end of this module of learning i can certainly say that it has been of great use to me, learning how to make games greater than the sum of their parts, the ethical issues between us and machines and how we interact with them, that just about anyone can produce a game nowadays but most of all from what i learnt while researching avant-gardeism and indie games, that art and video games are thriving together and in some cases becoming one, a creative fusion of aesthetics, music and writing.

This is in essence what i strive to achieve in video games, deep story driven games with memorable music all packaged together with intuitive gameplay and unique and beautiful art direction all coming together to make an experience to stand the test of time.

The conversations about the state of video games is another thing i found to be interesting, the fact that although almost anybody with a vision can create a video game nowadays but that this innovation is often overlooked by the giants of the gaming industry and new ideas being rejected in favour of more corporate and well recognised games although there is a noticeable shift happening in the industry with players growing tired of these old methods and craving fresh and new experiences that stimulate the brain instead of just being as safe and inoffensive.

all these things i have learnt in these sessions over the semester have really helped my gear my heavily artistic mind towards creating video games in a new and interested way while also taking on many of the tried and tested methods of gameplay production and even maybe creating my own music to make my own original content that in effect would be like translating my sketchbooks and creations into a living and breathing environment which is something i’ve wanted to do ever since i was a child, in the end its really helped develop me as a student

Task 8

I chose a picture of Yunfei Ji and a three-dimensional model of my integration and fused them together. I was fascinated by the ancient charm and the farmhouses and luxuriant plants in his paintings. The meaning implied in this painting makes me feel cold and upright. The tranquil forest lives with the evil thoughts of people and people, reminds me of combining my work with this painting. The color of Yunfei Ji’s paintings is like the real life of people calm and gorgeous, and my work is derived as a kind of evil thoughts, from the people’s hearts, came to another unrestrained world. The world on this side is not any color, only has a simple black and white, people feel more deeply evil and the obvious contrast with this world, people reflect on their own actions.

Reflective Summary

During the course over the past couple of weeks, I have put time into researching different aspects of game design, different artists that I can use as inspiration and going to the barbican has broaden my sense of understanding for design and creation it has taught me to be more aware of the things around me and how little I take them for granted, I have grown as an artist in the past couple of weeks, usually I would never do a blog but there is always a first time for everything and I enjoyed most of it.

During my research process I would use google scholar to reed different books done by people in the games industry and by artist and how they overcome different obstacles that I have spoken about in my blog posts. One research bit I found the most interesting was the emotional and behavioural modelling and why that is important to have in the game, I also researched about the technical aspects of game design and the creative part, most developers spend many years researching before they start creating the game and how important that research is.

I have also learned that if you want to find out something it is not always on the internet sometimes the answer might be outside, it might be with another person or sometimes in a book, and I have taken that mindset when doing my blogs and doing my work in university, because often when you think like you can come up with very creative ideas that could become something better.

Overall, I have learned many things throughout my weeks being at university, I have learned to overcome many obstacles and make my work better so for next time I will not have made the same mistakes as I have done before in the past. I wanted to ensure that my work was up to a good standard, so I spoke with a couple of my classmates and roommates on how I can make my work better and how to ensure that I keep that consistent flow throughout all my work. So, I want to take these principles and apply them into my work so that I can become a better artist and designer, I have done things that I would not usually do, for example do observational drawings, read books and research artists so that I have a better understanding on the work that I have done. So overall, I would say that in week 1 and to the last weeks I have changed for the better becoming more pro-active and making sure my work is up to a good standard and doing these blogs have ensured me to make sure that I keep on doing what I am doing now so that it helps me in the future to overcome any obstacle or work that I will have.

summary

In this module I have developed my research skills, extended my understanding of art history and pushed myself to analyse further details in my work.

Through out my research I have discovered how valuable researching art movements and not just individual artists is. This has allowed me to discover new artists with ease, reading about artists and then about artists involved in similar work at that time. Researching art movements has also allowed me to discover artists across a variety of mediums that all work to the same ideals and themes. This means that I have been broadening my field of research across different time periods, medium and values, giving me a wider variety of references to call upon in my practical work.

In my opinion, the authenticity task was one of favourite, because I found it highly interesting researching a variety of opinions towards the matter of artwork being truly authentic. This has allowed me to think about my own work and what and where I draw inspiration from, as well as looking at other practitioners work and how they have found their inspiration. Tasks where we had to analyse three images and relate them back to our own work I also found highly interesting as I thought it helped me make more connections between my work and other artists’, as well as improving my knowledge of other artists and how I evaluate their work. I also thoroughly enjoyed researching into how technology has impacted art, I liked forming an opinion towards the matter and voicing it in way that included research to help back up points made.

However, the Publish or perish! Task was one my least favourite. I have missed the lecture on that day due to my appointment. I have vised the blackboard to catch-up with work and to complete my task but I did not understand as much. I felt this was due to fewer detail about the artist in the PowerPoint. In this module I have developed my research skills, extended my understanding of art history and pushed myself to analyse further details in my work.

In conclusion, I have enjoyed the last ten weeks of research and coummunications, it has allowed me expended my knowledge and opened my mind to different artistic movements, I realized that artist work has a great impact on the society and in our day to day life. This blog has inspirited me to do further research on artiste work and always use referencing to show my researching skills, this has improved my analysing skills,

Reflective Evaluation

“You have to talk about ‘The Terminator’ if you’re talking about artificial intelligence. I actually think that that’s way off. I don’t think that an artificially intelligent system that has superhuman intelligence will be violent. I do think that it will disrupt our culture.”

  • – Gray Scott

A major factor that played into the difficulty of this module was the effect of financial problems, and the necessity of having to sort them out, taking time away from my work. I feel that this was unavoidable however, yet was still a big issue I see fit to note down for future reference so if something similar comes up, I learn to try and juggle the two things and still be able to get on with my work.

I feel however that during this module I learnt a lot of new things about a number of different aspects within the games industry and related fields, such as AI advancement as well as the interactions between humans and computers, which all in all have helped me when it comes to formulating ideas for games, or something similar. For example, the discussions on human computer interaction have given me ideas for different kinds of mechanics within video games, or different ways of presenting a story and so on. The discussions on AI, though it may not be related to games, expanded my point of view on the ethics of the advancement of artificial intelligence and also expanded my own knowledge on the subject which has raised a number of themes I found to be intriguing such how society will adapt and change to incorporate AI such as androids and so forth in the future, and how rights and ethics would work, etcetera etcetera.

During the discussions and work process I have noted a number of flaws in my methods of work and have begun to develop a number of different methods to replace these. One being that I will allot myself an hour or so a day to drop everything and get on with my coursework, as life the past four months has been the definition of hectic. I need to improve upon my ability to micro-manage situations, as well as improve upon my ability to articulate a point further, because I feel that it is evident that whilst the questions posed in these essays are answers, they can be very short, some being only two hundred and fifty words at most. The necessity of micro-management is a major topic I have focused on when reflecting upon this module, something that until now has been somewhat uncommon in my life. I feel however that as I work, the more I will learn how to overcome these problems and discover new ways of dealing with them and overcoming adversities.

All in all this module was beneficial to me as a sense of inspiration and influence. I took from a number of these lectures numerous interesting points that I have in my own time researched and learned more about in order to better understand the circumstances behind them, for example the ethics of Artificial Intelligence advancement and so forth, and it has opened by eyes to a number of practices that whilst beneficial to me a year or two ago, need to be adapted or changed to better suit my situation at University.

Task 7

These works are full of realistic style at the same time filled with the author’s meticulous work. They combine different cultures to combine reality with two-dimensional space to revitalize slightly older works. These works have a common philosophy, that is fusion. This convergence makes people feel something different, make the audience feel interesting, to marvel at the original combination of this is feasible. However, these mergers also make people reflect on these things changed by ‘me’ really belong to me, or belong to a violation of the original author? I do not think there will be an answer to this question. Different people have different views on this issue. However, I deeply feel that this integration is an excellent art and has great room for development for us to develop. It’s an art without any restrictions, and everyone can make great work that people find interesting and enjoyable and well-accepted.
