Task 11/12 Summary

This course for me is very fresh and helpful because during the period of my foundation course, although the teacher also talked about these but not so detailed and profound. From this module, I learned the how toĀ  analysis the content and critical thinking . Especially critical thinking, this way of thinking is very important for my future design career. Fortunately in this class I learned how to use this very well.

Task1 and 2 let me learned how to better use of Internet resources and how to distinguish the useful resources. This is because I used to use the cyber source did not carefully check the source and not view the authenticity of task through the study I know how to use the Internet daily research school library resources for me not only save time but also help me

Task 3 and 4 of this course are very important for us,Ā  especially in our subject (Fashion design) we need to be more vigilant this lesson .And thenĀ  I understand Plagiarism and Academic integrity and the difference of the severity of plagiarism because it is not only their own moral corruption ,but it is violated the original author’s rights and interests but also to remind us to protect their own interests to prevent plagiarism

Task 5 and 6 is I understand how the necessity of artist reference has been written in the correct format of reference

Task 7 and 8 for meĀ  is a very difficult task because of the need to read the article .I am not good at reading books and English content analysis .but I have to say that the reading process and then summarize lead me improve the analysis ability .But how to define the article , I still need time to improve

From Task 9 and 10 ,we learned in our ethical advertising. This taskĀ  for this course is very necessary because this not only reminds us of the moral bottom line of human nature and let us have a more profound ponder. I chose Duncan Quinn ‘s advertising as the theme of this task. this task made me think a lot about the topic of interest with the human problems and issues of gender equality in

the impact of my understanding of human nature and thinking of the moral bottom line of this is a challenge for me

The summary of this reflection gives me a new review of the content of my period of study.

This introspection process also made me have a new thinking about what I wrote before. This experience is very interesting and useful for me. It’s a fresh experience for me . And this is a very important experience for me. It is taught me a lot of knowledge and the way of thinking method I’ve lacked before. This class is very useful to me. Especially the process of teaching in class, I feel every class is high quality and the class made me feel the power of learning . I have to say I looking forward to every class.

Task 9/10 Ethics

Duncan Quinn in 2003 created a fashion brand to make their gentlemen service style of the suit .His website described himself: “although Duncan from London, his view of the world is seriously affected by years of learning about food, in the description of southern France wine and life” he put himself into a sincere, has the tutelage, understand the delight of life, He describe a person who has a quality of life style of a perfect gentleman. However, after seeing this picture will find

Duncan Quinn behavior and his own brand positioning and opposite

This picture is Duncan Quinn’s first advertisement. This photo is reflected not only the question of moral bottom line, but also a series of social moral problems, such as the smell of violence, and so on.

Firstly, this picture of male models in neat suit and leather shoes without wrinkles .Ā  On the contray, the female model has messy hair and the neck is also tied like an animal by the male model . It is not difficult to see the men’s messy collar . and this tie is took down by men model .He use his own tie to bond this women . Artist Aida Emelyanova said:”women not just a piece of meat ” but this advertisement isĀ  materialized in female .All the details described that Women are not only objects but also men’s appendages, and they are declaring that men have an absolute dominance in the world. Then, in today’s twenty-first Century,Ā  we have always held an attitude of opposition and condemnation on gender inequality . What puzzles me is why this advertisement is contrary to the mainstream view of society. Is it really something that the gentleman brand does? Because the so-called

freedom can constantly refresh the bottom line of people’s morality? I don’t see any respect for women from this picture only Duncan Quinn studios have a stereotype for women

Secondly, from this picture, I felt a violent atmosphere, revealing women exposed to violence against women in the car tend to cover the details, and the form of advertising’s greed picture not only on women even the children are an insult to mental injury

Thirdlyļ¼ŒI think this picture is not to depict vivid images of women .And to a certain extent, damaging the image of men .Because this picture demonstrates the contents and their brand positioning completely draw further apart . This photo not reveals the gentleman’s image but a image of hypocrite .So, this can not help but make people doubt whether their hearts like a neat and elegant appearance they like or like the male image presented in this picture as the surface clean and inward is filthy on these “gentlemen”s real inner world

Overall, This blatant sexism and the indulgence of violence makes me think people need to rethink where the bottom line of people’s morality is.

Task 5/6 Visual Research

Issey Miyake is an artist that I admire and respect, and he is also a fashion designer. He is good at combining lines with fashion and designing very famous Lssey Miyake lines.

Issey Miyake said I first began working “When in Japan, I had to confront the Japanese people’s excessive worship for foreign goods and the fixed idea of what clothes ought to be. I wanted to change the rigid formula of clothing that the Japanese followed”

Through my research, I found thatĀ  Issey Miyake’ s design is not only for his Japanese thinking and some other aspects. we can see that he inspired byĀ  madeleine Vionnet in his works, for example:

handkerchief dress, cowl neck and halter top. Also, the second important part isĀ  Kyoto kimono. We can clearly see from the Issey Miyake in the shadow of the product. He is also spreading the pioneer of East Asian culture. Besides the traditional Japanese costume drama also has deep influence on him.

Through my investigation I found that “Brazilian designer Francisco” s experimental use of geometric Costa manipulations of fabric took Miyake s relationship with the body “and garments to counteract and define the figure underneath the clothes (Palomo-Lovinski)” these things, also inspire miyake a lot.

Through the continuous study of geometric fabrics, he has a deeper understanding and understanding of the geometric lines. And applied to his clothes. This makes me feel very admirable

I think there are many aspects that affect the design of Issey Miyake, but more is about himself. He has profound understanding of the geometric pattern and the high creativity.

overall,I have to pointed out that in his work .the another shinny pot is that he use the High tech fabric .

Task 7/8 Reflective Writing

The article that i read is ” Fashion as communication, Barnard. M.”

This article describes the resolution of the class if it is based on people’s clothes. Although there existed class differences in twenty-first Century, everyone’s equality is a fact that we can’t deny and ignore. In the article, fashion is dominated by people of high class and judged by social status.

In this article, he mentioned “Everyday we make decisions about the social status and role of role”, “the right and wrong”, “I don’t think this is applicable to today’s society, and it’s a very superficial way. Because everyone has his own attitude towards fashion and different aesthetic standards. Therefore, it is unreasonable to differentiate the class according to the dress. Because some of the rich and cultural people pursue simple life now. They will not pay much attention to fashion.

This paper discusses the different fashion for different attitude, because different people decided to fashion is not a single, perhaps It could cause high class can lead the trend, but they can not define fashion . I found an article to support my point of view, It comes from “Revisiting the Inventories of Artois: Fashion, Status and, Taste at the Court of Mahaut, C. 1307 – 1310 ” From this article, the authorĀ  consider that theĀ  fashion is an attitude rather than the pursuit of luxury .Also, fashion cannot be defined, because the aesthetic and different way of life. Everyone can have their own fashion.

All these two articles have a common point of view is how to define fashion? It’s very one-sided when I just communicate through one time. During other person’s clothes to define the fashion is very one-sided. In my view,I consider that the fashion can not be define. This is because 他态he way to show fashion is not only through clothing ļ¼Œ but also your attitude, your attitude towards life.

Through this article I see different people have different thinking for fashion. I agree with others view : through the dress to determine social class is the objective existence .However, in today’s society, using this method to determine the folly of this is like to pricing this is. I need to emphasize that the fashion is not just clothing economy, is also a kind of attitude. But this kind of attitude is what some people are missing. We don’t use old ideas to define fashion. Because the real fashion is an attitude. And attitude can never be defined.

To sum up, After reading these articles, I felt that my thoughts became clearer and I reached my own conclusion. I know more deeply about the meaning of fashion to us.

Task 3/4 Academic Integrity

In twenty-first Century, fast fashion was used to describe the clothing project, which was based on the most popular fashion trends in spring or autumn fashion week.

I choose these three reference because according the first reference, It is clear to understand the definition of fast fashion. Also, we can see the trend of the development of fast fashion. Also It describe a fast rising trend .And Compare with traditional clothing retailers ,we can see clearly that the advantages of fast fashion . And how fast fashion makes use of its own advantages to attract customers.

Through the second reference, I learned that what people are most concerned about in shopping .That is the price and seasonal trend of shopping, respectively. The most important thing is to produce similar styles in a large amountĀ  in the shortest time.

The third reference, the reasonĀ  I choose it is because we know that despite theĀ  fast fashion demonstrate a sharply upward trend ,However, it brings serious consequences, such as copying other artists’ works, sweatshops and environmental pollution.

In the end, the reference told me the two sides of fast fashion with strict words and I felt very helpful to me. After making use of these reference, I feel that my article is more rigorous and convincing. And by studying the content of reference, I learned something I didn’t know before.

Task 11&12

Through the module of research and communication of this semester, I have learned how to use different research methods and open resources for me to use, which give me more chances to see more interesting works of art and improve my understanding of other artists. Also, it improve my ability of research and analysis skills.

While doing task 1&2, I found a book that was very enlightening to me.It is called
which edited by David Anfam. It helped me realize that abstract is relative to the concept of concrete. It is a common concept extracted from a variety of things, and then integrated into a new concept that forming the concept of abstract. With the development of the research of task, I realized that the existence of various artistic ideas in abstract painting is an important role in promoting the development of fashion design, which promotes the innovation of design concept, design inspiration and design direction in modern fashion design.

We are told that it is very important to write down your reference. So I learned how to referencing a book in the Harvard Style. In the task 5&6, I used this method and changed the previous annotation. Because of the research I did for task 5&6, I found a very interesting woman who called Bianca Jagger. She is the queen of fashion in 70s and Mousika of Yves Saint Laurent who comes from South America, also the rolling stones frontman Mick Jagger’s ex-wife. She is also a strong feminist and anti war activists. Her faith is ā€˜First influence, then change the world.ā€™ that made me deeply moved.

I need to say that I really donā€™t like Task 9&10 for the pictures that I can choose are both make me feel uncomfortable. I think they are unaesthetic, and even think they are ugly. But it is because of them, when I try to understand the meaning behind them and think from another point of view, I realized that sometimes the intention of the photographer does not determine the meanings of photographs, because the photo has its own destiny and the fate will be decided by the owned thoughts and all sorts of strange ideas of various groups who use it. This is something that we can’t control.

Overall, I enjoyed the Research and Communication module very much. It inspired me to try out different methods of working and experimenting with different mediums and I have learned a lot about the past artistic movements, and also exposed to many interesting works that I had never seen before. The most important thing is that I have knew the method that how to improve my own work and I improved my analytical ability while looking at the artworks of other contemporary practitioners.

Task 9&10

To tell the truth, when I saw this picture at the first time, I will think it is just a random picture in a pornographic website if I didnā€™t saw the trademark of American Apparel. In fact, I really can’t feel any sense of beauty from this picture. I just think it’s very vulgar and meaningless and I canā€™t imagine what such a picture is propagating.

I try to understand the meaning behind this picture that American Apparel used it as an advertisement. I think it probably means that the girls who wear their clothes are very sexy, proactive and confident, and they will send out a very woman’s breath that maybe will make them more welcomed by more men? The surrounding of the photographing environment is a common room that we can see in ordinary family. Does it mean that the girls who wear their clothes can be more easier and convenient to be sexy and beautiful at home? I think, if the picture wants to express these information, it is a very good starting point. But the problem is that the form of this picture is terrible, which can not be accepted by most of the people. Also, It is very easy to cause misunderstanding and bring people a sense of discomfort.

Tom Ford for Men fragrance shot by Terry Richardson,2007

There are a lot of sexy advertisements and also there are variety of forms to express sexy. I think the 2007 advertisement campaign from Tom Ford shot by the ā€˜artful deviantā€™Terry Richardson is a good example. Although it is very explicit, but because the photographer made a smart choice to enlarge the part of the body, combined with the senior post-processing, the picture is revealed a senior sexy breath. It reached the ultimate sexy theme and also successfully obtained people’s attention. It focuses on women’s crazy pursuit and love to men’s perfume, and a component containing some sexual hints. But the advertisement is to make the woman crazy, but the true audience of the advertisement is the male. So it was actually used the woman’s crazy attitude to stimulate the men’s desire to buy and make them crazy.

A France photographer who called Marc Riboud had said that ā€˜After allĀ weĀ are no machines, even thoughĀ weĀ work from behind a machine. WeĀ thinkĀ beforeĀ taking a photo,Ā weĀ think while taking it, andĀ weĀ have to think about it afterwards. ā€˜ I think this sentence is well worth remembering. And I think that everytime when we take photos, it’s very important to think deeply according to the audience of the photos. Because after the commercialization of the photos, we must be responsible for the photos that we take. But sometimes the intention of the photographer does not determine the meanings of photographs, because the photo has its own destiny and the fate will be decided by the owned thoughts and all sorts of strange ideas of various groups who use it. This is something we can’t control. In a word, this may be a difficult problem for us, but it still is our responsibility.

Task 7&8

After reading the <TASTE, FASHION AND THE FRENCH FASHION MAGAZINE> edited by Sanda Miller, I was surprised to know that the inception for the emergence of the fashion magazine is early in the 1672. In the middle ages, fashion is often associated with nobility. Their noble dignity brought them the best treatment and they were the future of fashion industry at that time. They always wore the clothes with gorgeous taste. The clothing of some fashionable aristocrats, the was the dream of other nobility for the reason that fashion is peopleā€™s advocacy of something in society in a period of time and fashion is always an expression of individuality.

On the views of art criticismļ¼Œ I am agree with the David Humeā€™s proposed system which express his thought that the general principles of taste are uniform in human nature, but there still is room for a good deal of explainable variability since different works of art will appear to different temperaments or at different stages of life.

Critics face the conflict between new art works and traditional art norms and show that traditional norms do not have the self-evident correctness through their own explanation, so that to make people are intolerable to traditional norms and strangeness. I think Contemporary artists are the witness of life and the witnesses of personal experience. They reorganize and structure the people and things that have happened and exist in the name of art, and give them meaning freely. In the face of contemporary art, critics pay attention to the process of creation and analyze the psychology of creation and the thinking mode of the artist. The effect of criticism is not to point out that the art do not have the right direction of development, but try to understand what direction the artist is.

ThereĀ areĀ aĀ thousandĀ HamletsĀ inĀ aĀ thousandĀ people’sĀ eyes.Ā It is the same to fashion. Fashion is not concrete and it is changing over time and vary from culture to culture. Large numbers of magazines appeared during the major social changes. Fashion magazines constantly adjust their content according to its target audience in different periods and the historical changes. It also carried the important functions of free speech, knowledge dissemination and ideological enlightenment, reflecting and accelerating the process of social transformation. Like the Womenā€™s magazines reflect radical social changes. In different historical periods, fashion magazine form different female images which affects the women of that time.

With the development and change of history, magazines became an important role in our life. It shapes our lives, telling us what to wear, what to eat, what to think about ourselves and the world around us. As far as I am concerned, any magazine which want to be resonant with its target audience needs to represent the social norms and cultural values of the given society.

Task 11/12-Summary

Task 11/12- Summary

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Research and Communications module and looked forward to attending the lectures each week. I find them incredibly informative and have encouraged me to consider going on to study fashion from a more academic perspective in the future.

Throughout the tasks that we were asked to base our writing on a topic of our choice (tasks 1 to 6) I purposefully based mine on something I had previously had very limited or no knowledge on. Although this did make completing the tasks more of a lengthy process than necessary it has resulted in me having a much greater general knowledge of fashion, designers and artists. I have really enjoyed this aspect as I know feel better prepared in all areas of Fashion and Textiles. One of my favourite discoveries is the well known Japanese designer Issey Miyake – I now know far more information about the designer behind iconic designs.

While I have found hurdles to jump during some tasks I have learnt a great deal throughout.

Although I had learnt to reference correctly previously I found going through it and properly understanding the method broken down very useful during the tasks three and four. This was also very useful for when researching for my projects in practical areas.

Iā€™ve found that my range of types of sources has grown throughout the module. While I do still use the internet predominantly I use it to find reliable sources in the form of journals, archives, online magazines and newspapers. I have also increased my use of research through using books. I had previously found this time consuming and tedious however I now know how to use the library effectively through Webcat. I also know that in many cases the information providedĀ  through books is in great detail and reliable so it is worth going through the process.Ā  Research and Communications has led me to gain confidence in using the library so I have also used it to order a book from the Hartley library for one of my practical projects.

Despite enjoying the module there are areas I have struggled with and would like to improve in the future. The most prevalent being my time management, this is an aspect I find challenging in all subject areas. I enjoy writing and am able to do it to a standard I am proud of when I have the time to do so. For this reason it is a shame that at times I have had to do tasks within a limited time and I am concerned that the quality of the writing may have been compromised.

I have also struggled with staying within the word count limit provided per task, I find choosing the most salient points and disregarding others difficult. I believe this also means that the structure of my writing is compromised as I lack the word count to write satisfactory introductions or conclusions. I aim to improve this in the future.

The task I enjoyed most was that based on ethics, particularly as it linked to feminism- a very hot topic with a lot some interesting opinions. As previously mentioned I have found this module extremely beneficial and stimulating and look forward to learning more next term!

TASK 11 & 12

Reflective Writing

Overall, I have found the research and communications module surprisingly useful. I have gathered many techniques for finding better sources of information, which I previously did not know. Looking forward I will be using these techniques in my research for my projects, to make them more well-rounded.

Firstly, for task 1 and 2 I decided to look at the works of Dieter Ross, from a book I found in library. The task was to scan an image from a book, and then find a photograph of an object, garment or textile from a website that relates to it. Furthermore, identify a museum or archive that provides information to broaden my understanding of the image and object. Considering I had never had to find online archives in museums, I found it rather easy to locate the one specified for my image of the book I choose. On this front, I believe I was lucky as the description of the image said that it was displayed at the Schimmel Museum. I think this was useful as on the museum website, although a bit sparse of the information I wanted, provided extra information which I did not know. I believe this would be useful to look out for and use in upcoming projects.

Task 3 and 4, the introduced me to Harvard referencing. Before this task, I never realised the true importance of correctly referencing work, and how if not doing so is plagiarizing others work. Ā This is not just importance for the artists which work we draw inspiration from; but also for myself as an artist, and be to protect my work and my rights. At first, I found the referencing very slow, especially when looking on websites and for newspaper articles. On many websites, you had to really dig for the information you wanted, and it was interesting to see how on some, few websites credited the actual author, and were defaulted to the websites overall publisher. Going forward I will use the Harvard referencing system on my referencing, but due to how time consuming it can be; will now be more selective with my sources, to not over extend myself with referencing too many things.

Moving on to task 5 and 6, we were tasked to create a mood board of the visual references, which we had selected to relate to what we thought a selected designer would have been inspired by. Then, we were asked to select one of these images, and write an analysis on it. Ā Ā I found this rather refreshing, because it made me as a designer, really think and research about the inspiration behind my inspiration. For this task, I looked at Timorous Beasties, a relatively well-known print company. Visually when I looked at his work I could see some of his inspiration but it wasnā€™t until I went and looked on their website a visited their description, that I found what was truly behind Timorous Beasties. I liked the process of searching keywords from their over view to find more in-depth inspiration. It really opened my eyes to how many useful and inspirational sources their work was made up of. And through this I found the abstract painter Bill Jenson, whose work I found very interesting to analysis. Going further, I think I will use this method to steer away from using as many ā€˜big nameā€™ designers, and go along this path of seeing where their inspiration came from to inspire me further; and broaden my research.

Task 7 and 8, I found very challenging. The task was to respond and reflect on a given text, in this case I those ā€˜Taste, Fashion and The French Fashion magazineā€™. I had never personally come across a text so difficult to read, and it was a real challenge to continuously look up complicated words and phrases. However, all the same, rather interesting and rewarding to discover the deeper meaning of the text. Usually, when gathering inspiration, I would steer clear for this kind of text, just because of how confusing it can be. However, going forward I think I might give it a second chance, as the quotes you can obtain and almost invaluable and I feel could add much depth to work.

Finally, for task 9 and 10, this was one of my favourites out of the tasks. For this task, we were given two controversial images and had to choose one to explain the ethical issues displayed. For this I chose the American Apparel image. I find ethical issues such as these displayed in American Apparels advert very interesting. I liked visually picking apart the image and describing what I saw and what it suggested. It reminded me, as a designer to be more judgemental and voice my opinion on such matters. Maybe even use such ethical issues to create a more interesting project; and to go forward with my analytic debating skills more forwardly and freely.

I feel everything I have learned this module, has been justified useful to take forward in my upcoming projects. And to use these skills to make these projects more well-rounded and interesting, as it has shown me that research is just as important as the work later produced.
