Comedy is the Key to Learning

Unfortunately we are human beings! Learning at ECS is really fun. I love the way teachers use humour to reverse the class attitude, especially when we are bogged down into some horrible details. A couple of weeks ago, our lecturer was talking about WSDL and WS-Addressing. The topic got so complex that I started looking for my coffee to keep my eyes open. Other fellows were looking at the wall-clock and even the door! I was confused with the irony of the topic. These (WSDL etc. Continue reading →

No Santa Outfit Yet, There’s Maths to be Learnt

Christmas is getting nearer, but I canā€™t don my false beard and Father Christmas outfit just yet. There are still several coursework deadlines to be met before Christmas, along with several more tests in the Maths modules. These add up to a considerable amount of work, and there will not be much relaxing until they are completed. Tickets have gone on sale for the ECS Christmas party, which takes place on the 8th December. Continue reading →

Time is Always Against Us

ā€œTime is always against usā€. By Morpheus, in one of my favourite movies - Matrix-Reloaded). The beauty of the quote is ā€“ you can easily replace ā€œusā€ with ā€œstudentsā€ and still enjoy it ;) I would never be able to understand why we are given such a ā€œshort-timeā€ to complete our coursework ( e.g. ā€œjustā€ two weeks to write one-page table, three weeks to prepare a 15-slides presentation and a month to read 20-pages standard specification). UCAS Visitor Days

I am writing this post now because next Tuesday is the first day (of many!) that the UCAS students come to visit ECS to be convinced that Southampton is the best place for them to come to study. The process of applying to university generally involves submitting a form to an organisation called UCAS. Continue reading →

Jumpstart Week

Jumpstart week made a good impression on most students when they discovered that it didnā€™t begin until 11:30am on Monday, allowing for healthy amounts of fun over the weekend. First impressions were improved when we found out that food had been provided in liberal amounts for us, free of charge. During the introduction, we were told that Jumpstart was designed as a means for introducing us to ECS, to the city of Southampton, and most importantly, to each other. Continue reading →

Exam Results – What a Result!

I just got my exam results and I did waaayyy better than I would've imagined, thank God :D The thing is, I was quite a mess right before the exams. I was so emotionally unstable that I got to the point where I didn't care about what would happen anymore. My exams were getting closer but it wasn't sinking in and all I wanted to do was hide in my dream world. This wasn't helping me at all. So I sought help. First, I went to see my tutor. Exams Schedule Puts Killer Subjects Last

Exams. It's the time when you start reassuring your parents that you will ace them because you've been working hard all this while. *cough* One thing that amazes me is how my exam schedule would always put my killer subjects last. My schedule would start off with relatively easier papers first before building up to a somewhat climatic ending. And strangely enough, the last few papers would have at least a 2-day gap before them, giving me ample time to do any last-minute revision. Continue reading →

A Needed Break Over Christmas

Weā€™re back to the reality of university after a much-needed and in most cases much-deserved break over Christmas, where I for one spent so much time worrying about how much work I had to do that I didnā€™t have much time to do any - although I did find that mulled wine helped with this, in some way I just canā€™t remember how. Itā€™s all kicking off as the end of term approaches with coursework deadlines, exams to revise for and the almighty Group Design Project final presentation. Continue reading →
