University is a Pretty Good Thing

Hi all! I probably should have done my first blog sooner, but Iā€™ve been kinda busy and havenā€™t really had the time to sit down and collect my thoughts like this. Now that Iā€™ve been at Southampton for a month and a half, and have had time to settle in and get into the swing of things, I guess some reflection is in order: University is a Pretty Good Thing. Time flies…

It has already been over a month since I arrived in UK. Time flies when Iā€™m still busy with my coursework and studies. Though this is the first time Iā€™m in UK, settling down doesnā€™t take much time for me as the university provides excellent student service and accommodation for international students. However, I find myself having to work really hard to keep up with the lectures. Continue reading →

Five great things about being an ECS student

Five great things about being an ECS student Soā€¦ Iā€™m about halfway through my first semester, and the fact that Iā€™m only now sitting down and writing my first entry must say a lot about how busy I am, and how much of a great time Iā€™m having here in Southampton! Instead of writing a fairly standard article about how brilliant Southampton and ECS are academically (which they really are: check out the rest of the website if you donā€™t believe me), Iā€™m really trying to write more... Eureka!

Eureka! I think I may have finally hit one of those eureka moments. Fortunately for the residents of Southampton, I wasn't in the bath at the time and simply just expressed this is as a knowing grin for the rest of the day. For many months, I have had a vague idea of what I wanted to achieve in my third-year project, but was struggling for the academic justification and/or supporting evidence to provide foundation for my work. A year late…

Almost a year since my previous blog post so I will fill you in with what has been going on in my life! Last year shortly after my blog post I successfully applied for a position at Buckle Consulting, a local web design company close to campus. The job was ideal: web design being a familiar area to me, course related, part-time and working from home. Continue reading →

“Let there be Spin!”

"Let there be Spin!"I ā€™ll be going into my sixth week at university on Monday. That is mid-way through my first Semester. Those are some scary statistics. Put them into perspective: my brain has yet to process my being at university. It doesnā€™t really have much time, does it? Donā€™t get my wrong ā€“ itā€™s not because it doesnā€™t feel like university. Itā€™s just that itā€™s going too fast. Continue reading →

On the back burner

On the back burner The advance of my project slowed significantly for week 4. The third-year project accounts for a third of the workload, so there are going to be weeks where very little is done despite the best intentions. That being said, it was possible to continue with a drip-drip approach. For example, I managed to complete an initial project plan in a 40-minute gap squeezed between two lectures. Undergraduate Storyboard

Hiya, my name is Sally, I am an undergraduate student of the University of Southampton, I am doing Electronic Engineering in ECS! This blog is like a storyboard recording and showing you my life here as a student in Southampton, the University and in ECS (Just like the relationship between the library ---- , its function category of ā€“Mathematics-- and the specific operation --abort()-- in C programming )! I hope you find the story FUN! ------------<stdlib. Continue reading →

ā€œIt is great to be back!ā€

ā€œIt is great to be back!ā€ ā€“ A set of words I didnā€™t think I would use soon enough. After all, at the end of a whole year of assignments and exams, the only thing I could think of was going back home and relax. No more work, no more pressure, no more stress. However, a couple of months into my vacation I started to really miss Southampton, my friends, my freedom and even being given work to do. Continue reading →

Never underestimate the power of friends

Never underestimate the power of friends; they can help you when times get tough... or when you're trying to understand certain obscure concepts in Theory of Computing. In the first year admittedly I didn't go to Zepler labs much, but since the end of last year I've discovered how useful it is to be able to talk to people about work and discuss any problems which you come across (within the guidelines of ECS collaboration policies of course!).
