Second Year is Hectic

So although Iā€™m already a second year, this is my first blog for you all to read! Iā€™m studying the ITO courseā€¦ and I cannot believe how hectic life has become since last year!! Gone are the days of feeling free and being able to go out any night of the week ļŒ We have another C# module this term, itā€™s literally the most miserable part of the whole week!! Weā€™ve been keeping each other going during the labs with mountains of chocolate and sweets :P I would definitely recommend any... Continue reading →

My Tokyo Summer Placement

A special summer 恓悓恫恔ćÆēš†ć•ć‚“ļ¼ Hello everyone and welcome to this very special edition of my blog, brought to you from 6000 miles away in Japan! The Japanese at the start means ā€œHello everyoneā€, by the way. So, what am I doing here? Well, to answer this question you must cast your mind back (or at least move your scroll bar down!) to the end of last year, when I had a string of interviews for summer placements. First Year is Over

Hi all. My first year is over, in fact, it has been over for a while now. But I couldnā€™t avoid taking my mind out off ECS for a while. I must admit that even if it is supposed to be the easiest one, year one knew how to stress me out from time to time. Anyhow, I am happy to announce that I have not failed any module and I do not have to re-sit any exams. Therefore, I am half-way through my four-month summer vacation worrying about nothing. Computer Science is not for the faint-hearted

If there's anything I've learnt this year it's this: Computer Science is not for the faint-hearted. I'm talking about things like artificial intelligence, networking theory, compiler engineering... these are all difficult subjects for instance. I hear some people complain that these subjects are useless. I disagree however because I think it depends entirely on what field you are going into. I think it is still possible to excel in them with a lot of diligence (but also possible to fail them). Continue reading →

I Have Learnt A Lot Since My Last Post

Some of the things I have learnt since my last post: 1. Writing a compiler is hard (but fun). I don't know what it was, whether it was the timing of the coursework assignments, the abnormal length of the term, or just people leaving things to the last minute, but what we ended up with was one of the most difficult weeks of the term, as everyone furiously attempted to complete the coursework for the Compiler Engineering module. Being a part of ECS has many perks

Being a part of ECS has many perks ā€“ near unlimited access to extremely powerful computers, discounts on a large amount of professional level software, very knowledgeable and helpful staff, thereā€™s a lot going for it beyond the quality of the education. But above all that is without a shadow of a doubt the free food. Today (as of writing) we were offered a free, all-you-can-eat buffet lunch in the Mountbatten common room. Rolls! Crisps! Ɖclairs! Doughnuts! Water! Truly, it was excellent. Continue reading →

On My Final Project

I think the blog entries are going to get a little sparse in the forthcoming weeks as it is the stretch of a project where there is an effort to maximise the time available. Fortunately, I appear to have improved during my time at University on matters relating to keeping people informed on my progress. Over the last week I had two meetings with "disinterested" parties in my project. The first meeting was with my second examiner. Continue reading →
