This is not the end of alicebrown73

With a goodbye to my UOSM2008 module, this is not goodbye to alicebrown73! For those of you who don’t know,Ā within my first ever post I carried out a self-test to evaluate my level of digital literacy at the time, giving myself a score from 1 ā€“ 5 (1 being no experience and 5 being very experienced) based on certain criteria. I have now retaken the test after exactly 14 weeks of this blog. Continue reading →

ā€œThe only time you should ever look back; is to see how far youā€™ve come.ā€

I have to admit I completely underestimated this module in so many ways. Firstly, I personally have always struggled with my writing due to my dyslexia. I dreaded the thought of my peers reading my blog and judging me on this. However, this blogging experience has made my confidence levels sky high and I no long feel anxious about this aspect. This new confidence has enabled me to enhance my online professional profile on Twitter, LinkedIn, WordPress and Instagram. Continue reading →

Final Reflections

(milo.co) When I started this module I had no idea how demanding blogging actually is and just how much goes into building your online identity. I has been such a pleasant experience having a small community of me and other students of UOSM2008, writing, sharing and communicating with each other via blogs It has been an educational experience because not only did I learn from others’ blog posts, but I also learned a lot from the comments others left on mine. Itā€™s only the beginningā€¦

Despite the fact that I’m young a girl born in a technological era, saying that I did not know how to make the most of the web isĀ an euphemism. A couple of months ago, I barely used the most common forms of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, hence I had never imagined myself blogging every week and, even less, liking it. This course was not only a challenge but also a great opportunity to learn. The topics were really engaging throughout the whole module. Continue reading →

AdiĆ³s UOSM2008

I chose the ‘Living and Working on the Web’ module because I wanted to do something different from the context of my degree and doing something online-based in the digital era in which we now live really appealed to me. I have learnt so much about various Internet-related issues and developed opinions from my own research and other blogs to establish my own stance on them. Continue reading →

UOSM2008: Final Reflections.

It’s been a great journey this semesterĀ by taking this module. I’ve learnt so much in order toĀ develop my professional online profile. I identified myself as a digital nativeĀ andĀ a digital resident when IĀ was writing up the post for Topic 1. Following this, it has really allowed me to take on the opportunities provided to meĀ to develop my professional online profile. Continue reading →

Final Reflections

I approached UOSM2008 with caution at first. Being a Web Scientist, this module was a compulsory one and so perhaps not one I would have chosen myself. The concept of learning through blogging was a strange one at first and I was not sure if I would like it. Now that the module has come to an end, I have found that it was indeed a good way to encourage students to go out and research a topic, write about it, engage with the opinions of others, and critically reflect. Continue reading →

The endā€¦

Throughout this module I have seen mine and my peers blogs flourish and grow which have provided some very intellectual debates and questioning. At the start of the module IĀ completed a digital literacies self-test, in which IĀ scored myselfĀ in different digital skills. The results of this first test can be read in my first blog post and are also included in the following table. Also in the table are the results of my re-evaluationĀ of my digital literacy (1 is low and 5 is high). Continue reading →

Looking Back Over My Shoulder

Reflections Picture from themes.com I initially selected Living and Working on the Web as a module choice hoping that it would further improve my general computer skills.Ā  Happily things worked out well for me.Ā  The self-taught module allowed me to push my self, further develop my online skills and knowledge, incorporate feedback into my subsequent posts and improve my online presence to ultimately make me better prepared for my ever encroaching job search. Final Reflections : #UOSM2008

So this is it! It may be the end of the course, but it’s just the beginning for me! Although my degree is in English, the few modules I’ve had to blog for have always seemed laborious & at times I struggled to find the willpower to blog on a regular basis. I picked this module as it was a topic I felt I would be interested in & I wanted to try something new. Continue reading →

Farewell to UOSM 2008

What have I learnt from UOSM2008? Previously, I held the opinion that learning could only be achieved through formal avenues such as lectures and seminars, however, through engaging in discussions on Twitter and interacting with fellow students in the comments of blog posts, the module has shown that personal learning networks can come in a variety of forms. Continue reading →

Farewell to UOSM2008

As a Web Scientist, Living and Working on the WebĀ (UOSM2008) was a compulsory module which is unlike the majority of others I’ve had the opportunity to interact with over this semester who chose to take it. I’ll admit that I was initially quite cynical about the whole idea of this module: “How are we going to learn anything by writing a few blog posts?!?” I said to myself. Continue reading →

When One Door Closes Many More Open

Doing economics doesnā€™t often give me a chance to explore the world of writing and blogging so the opportunities that this module has given me have grown me as a person. I never thought Iā€™d be the type of person to make videos or write blog posts, Iā€™ve had friends do it but I didnā€™t think that could be me. This is a summary of my self-test, comparing against myself in the beginning to where I am now. Click here to read the full version. Continue reading →

Goodbye UOSM2008

And just like that, Living and Working on the Web has come to an end. By far my favourite module of this semester, I have gained an immeasurable wealth of knowledge and skills as a result of my participation. The Topics: Quick Fire Key Learnings 1 Digital Visitors and Residents Living a large proportion of my life online, but not being 100% comfortable expressing my persona in all virtual locations (White and Cornu, 2011) means I am more a digital resident than visitor. The Journey to Becoming SOTONSAM

I have always fancied myself as a bit of a ā€œcomputer whizā€; I have been using a computer for as long as I can remember, and cannot remember a day in the past 6 or so years in which I havenā€™t used/checked/perused at least one form of social media. However, until taking this module, I did not fully appreciate how the complex phenomenon of the Web is so much more than just tweets, Facebook statuses and Instagram posts. Continue reading →
