The Final Reflection: My UOSM2008 Experience

When taking this module I thought I knew what to expect from the content considering I had already completed the MOOC in UOSM2012. However what I didn’t expect to learn was how to relay that information and create concise, interesting and informative content for others. While I was keen to refresh my knowledge of the web, I also wanted to gain experience in writing online blogs. Self Test: Then vs. Continue reading →

To New Beginnings…

As explained in my introduction, I decided to join UOSM2008 because I always had an interest in starting a blog, so I was optimistic about the skills I would learn and how I could use them to better my professional identity, and in the future make a name for myself online. I was blindly stepping into a module that would drastically help my tech beginner, naïve self. I had no knowledge of the online world beyond social media and funny cat videos. Continue reading →

Final thoughts for Living and Working on the Web

Created using Canva With Living and Working on the Web complete, what can I say I’ve achieved? By researching the topics over the course of UOSM2008; presenting this information and discussing it online with others, I have gained a much better appreciation on how I use the internet and how I portray myself to others. My favourite topic being Topic 4, since my mum works in a primary school it seemed appropriate to research an area which could benefit the young children she works. Continue reading →

Topic 5: Reflection

During topic 5, I was able to become familiar on an ongoing argument about Open Access that I was previously ignorant to. Open Access means that all information is free to all and easily accessible. After researching into the pros and cons I analysed them from the different viewpoints of the authors, publishers, individual, students and businesses for example. Continue reading →

Reflection on Topic 5

Created using Canva The final week’s topic of open access had been a nice conclusion to the ‘Living and Working on the Web’ module and have felt strongly in favour for open access to become more prevalent in the academic world. Through reading other’s blogs, it seemed that as a group we agreed that open access would bring more benefits than costs, not just academically. Continue reading →

Topic 5: Pros and Cons to open access

Created using Canva First of all, what is open access? Open access refers to content that is digital, online, free of charge and free from almost all copyright and licensing restrictions (Suber, 2014). What this essentially means is that the content that is created under this ideology will be available to anyone that can access the internet. Many websites that rely on user-generated content, such as YouTube and DevianArt, have open access in order for everyone to view the content created. Continue reading →

Topic 5: Reflections

When first approaching this week’s topic exploring the disadvantages and advantages of a content producer making their content freely available online, my first student-orientated thoughts led me to assume that only positives could eventuate from this. Who doesn’t love free stuff? However when reading around this topic further, and considering it from a wider perspective, namely that of a content producer, my opinions started to change. Reflecting on Open Access Implications for Content Producers

In my Topic 5 blog, I tried to give a well-rounded and balanced view of the implications for academic content producers making their materials freely available online.  I personally agree with open access, and think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.  Since then, I’ve been reading other students’ blogs and learning more about it…   Rofini’s blog looked at a completely different angle and focused on music content. Advantages and Disadvantages for Content Producers Making their Materials Freely Available Online

When knowledge is shared freely and without most licensing restrictions, it constitutes as open access.  As a student, I often wish more articles are open access! Paid and open access academic articles work in different ways, my Piktochart image shows this: Video X advocates for open access in academia, stating: “students’ educations literally depend on access to the journal literature… professors can only teach what they have access to”. Reviewing my digital portfolio development throughout this module #uosm2008

My personal online presence has altered greatly over the course of this module I have strived to engage with new platforms and better use my existing profiles to improve my online professional profile. While I had maintained a blog during my year abroad last year I decided to use privacy settings to effectively take it offline, believing some content might be too personal. Prior to the module I had taken the view it was to my advantage to remain anonymous online. Continue reading →

UOSM2008 FINAL SUMMARY

My current online activities and subsequent online professional profile have greatly developed over the course of this module. I now appreciate and utilise the online professional, employability and networking opportunities that I once failed to identify – previously favouring the web as a platform for socialisation and recreation. This progression began with the management of my online security. Continue reading →

Topic 6 -Module Summary

Before taking UOSM2008 my professional online presence was virtually non-existent other than my Facebook account and sales website which did not have my name to it directly -though I was careful about my digital footprint, favouring nothing to be found than anything negative. This module has given me the time and a useful peer network to help develop my professional profiles, as well as convincing me of the benefits to ensuring positive online content is available for employers to find. Topic 6: Online Portfolio

I really enjoyed the module as well as giving my opinion about various topics for discussion we had. I’d say the most interesting one for me was probably the second one, where we discussed online identities and personalities. I would say that on some of the topics I felt it’s difficult to express myself completely, but hopefully I did alright. Continue reading →
