Privacy is crucial in a democracy, and shouldn’t be conflated with wrongdoing (Solove, 2007). However, as the adoption of the internet has increased, symbiotically the amount of privacy has decreased. Faced with this problem, individuals have started to separate their once unified identity into separate profiles. In the early years of the internet, it was much easier to hide your online identity. Cartoonist Peter Steiner published an illustration in a 1993 issue of The New Yorker that perfectly depicted the anonymity that came with internet interactions. Peter Steiner’s cartoon illustration (Steiner, 1993) SINGLE IDENTITY Facebook and Google have been large influences in creating a single identity on the web. Continue reading →

We might think of the web as a space, a cyberspace whereby different individuals have online personas, which constantly grow; each time we create new accounts, we add to our online identities (Costa and Torre, 2011).
