At the end of my previous post I examined the idea of the Internet being a basic human right, discussing this further with Sheyra. She stated there are other amenities more important as a human right, and that geographical differences make it impossible for everywhere to have equal Internet access. In my research of this topic I realised just how different each individual accesses and uses the Internet. Sinead made a comment that linked to an article that suggested personal choice was also a factor that defined digital differences and was why some people showed “information illiteracy”. Initially, I wasn’t aware how the term ‘digital differences’ applied to me; I assumed it referred to technical differences between certain technologies i.e. laptops vs tablets. Reflection: How do we tackle digital inequality?

Before this topic, I had not considered digital inequality. I had accepted inequality and discrimination offline but never stopped to consider the effects it may have online. However, I am now able to appreciate that there are a multiplicity of factors which ultimately make our digital experience’s different. This lead me to question certain things about digital differences that I had not considered originally. Having not previously looked at the concept of Digital Differences, this topic was a deeply interesting one to explore. One of the most useful resources at my disposal for analysing how I might be placed on the ‘continuum’ of low to high levels of digital literacy – and thus impacted by a digital divide – was the FutureLearn MOOC. Having researched digital differences and after viewing my peer’s thoughts, I feel as if I have gained a deeper understanding of inequalities that exist and how this affects many people’s lives on a national or international scale . Divide-ing: Opinions!

This week on UOSM2008, we covered the Digital Divide. I attempted to explore this as a concept and look at my own experiences. This was enlightening but differently to how I thought. Instead of finding that there were certain ways in which I had been limited by my circumstances, I instead found myself to be very lucky in terms of the access and support I had regarding digital technology. This week it was crazy to see how much everybody upped their game on their blogs, so many more self-made graphics and well researched posts!  I feel that I have steadily continued the persona on my blog  from last week and enjoy the colloquial stance that I am taking.
