Freshers Week Come Around Already

So freshers' week has come around already; after what seems like an incredibly short summer, we are thrown straight back (with full force!) into uni life. It is very interesting how different this summer, after my second year here, has been when compared to last summer and the summer before. Summer 2009 I'm going to be totally honest; the summer I had before I came to university was pretty awful. Continue reading →

Computer Science is not for the faint-hearted

If there's anything I've learnt this year it's this: Computer Science is not for the faint-hearted. I'm talking about things like artificial intelligence, networking theory, compiler engineering... these are all difficult subjects for instance. I hear some people complain that these subjects are useless. I disagree however because I think it depends entirely on what field you are going into. I think it is still possible to excel in them with a lot of diligence (but also possible to fail them). Continue reading →

The Viva Presentation

The Viva presentation was sorted two weeks ago and all the examinations are now done and dusted. Barring some very unexpected poor results, it should confirm that I have achieved my original aim - when I started back at University - of obtaining a good degree from a quality university. My academic career will continue for another year, which will allow the transformation of that presumed Bachelor's degree into a Master's degree. Continue reading →

#4 Results and Houses

#4 - Results and Houses I got my results just over a week ago. I got a 2:ii. I expected as much, though. Let down by Formal Methods, yet I did insanely well in Software Engineering somehow. In much more interesting news, I have now moved into my new house and all I can say is that this is awesome. I love this house. It’s brilliant. I still haven’t entirely unpacked, but I am most of the way there now. Continue reading →

How to Decide Where to Study

System.out.println(“Hello World”); * And that’s how you start your career in software engineering! Among the many good decision that I have made in my life, l would rather say – short life ;) one was to join software engineering and the other was to choose ECS for my MSc! I have an odd habit to delay an important decision unless I have gained all the essential knowledge needed to make that decision. Continue reading →

Project Work SEG is Done, Even with Members Dropping Out

SEG IS OVER! For the uninitiated, SEG stands for our Part II Software Engineering Group project, where we spend a whole semester working on a piece of software while embracing the trials and tribulations of group-based software development. It all started when we were told our group allocations. The groups were randomly chosen, so if Lady Luck was having PMS at the time, you could've been stuck with your arch nemesis for the rest of the semester. Continue reading →
