Reflecting on Online Identities

Source by Phoebe Taylor made on Piktochart As an active social media user and soon to be a job-hunting graduate, analysing the benefits and drawbacks of online identities has proved to be very important for my future. From my post, I developed an understanding of the difference between single and multiple identities, concluding that multiple identities are more beneficial in present day. However, my conclusion slightly altered after reading my peersā€™ posts. Continue reading →

Single Identity Vs Multiple Online Identities

Peter Steinerā€™s cartoon illustration, Fleishman (2000) When the web started out, it was easy to be anonymous online (as shown inĀ Steiners‘ cartoon). But as our dependence and use of the web increases, so has the importance of how we present ourselves online. Individuals must now carefully consider how they identify themselves, as online identities are becoming an extension of our personal lives (Costa and Torres, 2011).Ā  Slideshow by Phoebe Taylor, uploaded via Slideshare. Keep it private

This weekā€™s topic was really eye-opening, as it focused on an area of digital identity that we donā€™t consider. Making one wrong choice online could potentially negatively affect us for life. After reading many of my peersā€™ posts, I have realised that my idea of having multiple identities is very different from others. However, the majority did agree that having a single identity was not as advantageous. Continue reading →

Who Are You Going to Be Today?

Image: Getty Images Design: Ashley Britton/SheKnows In my previous post, we uncovered what it means to have multiple identities online: the fact that we need them to get jobs, we curate them for our followers or we protect them for the freedom of self-expression. We concluded that it is also very important to be wary of where our personal information ends up. Continue reading →

IDS: a reflection

This past week has taught me a lot about online identity – the management, the lasting effect, the benefits and drawbacks of online identity. But what stands out to me is the importance of having an online professional identity. Whilst this is not a requirement for all, on reflection, I feel that this topic has made it a requirement for me. Continue reading →

Single Identity vs Multiple Indentites:Reflection

I found this weekā€™s topic to be very eye-opening. It made me realize the importance of correctly managing my online identities and the possible negative repercussion that can arise from my digital activities. While I explored the differences between single and multiple identities in my previous post, I mainly focused on the benefits and drawbacks to an individualā€™s personal and professional lives whereas many of my peers emphasized aspects such as identity theft.
