Reflection: Discrimination, social media and getting a job

This topic on social media and ethics could go in many different directions and as such a large area has been covered by different posts. I personally took the approach of employers vetting candidates through social media as this is a subject that has veer increasing relevance especially to us as students who will soon be looking for employment. This week I chose to further build on the topic of online identity theft. Reflection: Topic 4

I was immediately drawn to this week’s topic due to its broad scope. Many issues raised by business or educational uses of social media were presented to us and it was required of us to decide and discuss which we felt to be most significant. The range of views and opinions from my peers were particularly evident this week just from the differing blog titles. This meant no two blogs discussed the same issue, leading to intriguing perspectives on a variety of topics. Continue reading →

When I first saw the question title for this topic a number of instances that I recalled from the last 5 years sprung to mind. After engaging with the readings, it was clear to me the ethical issue I wished to discuss was privacy. This topic was brought into the public eye over the past week as Eva Carneiro, the female, former Chelsea club doctor claimed to be the victim of sexism and more shockingly, death threats (Guardian, 2016). Reflection: Prison in Mind…

This week’s topic’s given me a very good opportunity to gain more knowledge from different perspectives regarding ethical issues raised by the educational and business use of social media – everyone’s had their go and lots of novel ideas came up. Reflection: The law on our side?

I did not feel as engaged with this week’s topic as I had the previous three. I chose to continue exploring the theme of employment, and specifically the legality and morality of Facebook screening employees, prospective or otherwise. Some of my colleagues chose to take an entirely new approach to this topic, and, in hindsight I might have done the same, as I felt I perhaps limited the scope of what I could discuss. I appreciate the way all the topics set by our professors have tied together. Issues that arise with social media is a topic that has been lightly touched upon in my previous blog posts. Therefore, I really enjoyed have the chance to talk in more detail about one of the many issues. I found that there was a wide range of issues talked about between my peers. Reflection of ethical issues in work

My initial understanding of the ethical issue – privacy, regarding the educational use of social media consisted of a lack of anonymity on the social profiles of teachers. Also, the need to think twice before posting online, regarding the professionalism of, and how posts will be received, was drawn to my attention through my primary research. Continue reading →

Summary of ethical issues caused by professional social media use…

I enjoyed the freedom of this topic as I feel the task could have been taken in several ways. Upon reading others blogs I wanted to take a different approach to the task and present a very current issue that I thought a lot of other students could easily relate to. However, I do feel that more important issues were raised by other students, as privacy of online professionals in my opinion is not as important as the modern way in which the news is presented (as discussed in Tobie’s post). Has Privacy gone too Far?

In this modern world we are taught to private everything online and not let anyone have the excuse to expose you (Greenwald, 2014). However my question is how far is too far? Zac’s blog caught my eye this week. It was about the world of football and mainly focused on discrimination. Initially, topic 4 seemed to be a little more appealing to me, due to the personal relevance of the specific field. It appeared to be easier to write and source when compared to previous topics, which I think shows how interesting and relatable the topic was to me. Topic 4: The Penultimate Reflection

This week’s topic proved to be the most stimulating thus far. Despite being perhaps the most specific yet, there were still a multitude of case studies from which one could chose. A quick skim read of the titles of everyone’s blog posts serves as testament to this – they varied from parental control to the use of social media by teachers. Continue reading →

It was great that this week’s question was a little narrower I feel I would’ve been overwhelmed with the idea of all ethics and social media – there is a lot that could be talked about! I enjoyed reading other people’s blogs and was surprised by how few talked about the ethical issues regarding catfishing, which, as I mention in my blog, I thought would be the popular option. Topic 4 – Reflection

The freedom of this week’s topic allowed people to dive further into areas that they found interesting. Personally, the idea of ‘catfish’ from the point of view of the person whose identity is being stolen interested me the most and I felt very strongly about this topic. What was surprising was Tiffany also felt strongly about this topic especially because she herself has been used to ‘catfish’ someone else. We shared very similar opinions and both spoke of the damage it can cause. Continue reading →
