Open Data Hack-around day

May 22, 2013
by Christopher Gutteridge

When: June 26th, 10am-5pm
Where: Access Grid room, Level 3, Building 32 (and probably also the Level 4 coffee room for less formal stuff)
The data.southampton team will be hosting a hackaround day where we’ll give demos, take ideas, help you use the data and build neat things. The exact format of the day will be very loose, but anybody interested is welcome to drop in and have a chat, watch a demo or meet other interested people to start developing ideas and new uses.

If you’re definitely/possibly coming, you can indicate it on the facebook page for the event.

Got some requests or ideas already? Leave them in the comments.

I wanna build an open data game!

The premise is “Do you know your WAIS (or whatever research group you’re in)” and there’ll be questions based on ECS people’s linked data. Would also need the desk layouts of each floor as well (WAIS: 3rd & 4th floor B32).

The objective is to see how well you know your peers: research interests, where they sit, etc. Most points awarded if you know people with interests that are most different to yours, least points for people most similar to you.

The end result will be a leaderboard of ‘know-it-alls’ – could even do a “Bacon number” thing with the top-scorer for fun!

I’ve had this idea in my head for awhile now, just dunno how to code it all!

    • We don’t have that degree of data for the whole uni (actually, I do, but not for open data).

There’s a few more research groups who’s memberships we can’t casually give out without consulting carefully. That said, we can maybe play with the data on the day as it’s not confidential internally. Check out all.soton.ac.uk for the kind of internal data we have.

I did something similar a while back with music data. It’s not in a fit state to open source but I’m happy to give you a copy of the code on the day if you think it’d be useful.

As for desk layouts – Chris has already said that we can’t allow that data to be public, but no reason someone can’t build a WAIS desk plan dataset for internal use only, and bring it along! 🙂

  3. Desk layouts — it’s more that I would want to give people informed consent. Publishing desk location might be no biggy to many people, but some may not consider it OK.

However internaly, there’s much less concern. When we make open data about people we should consider more than just the legal situation. We want our staff & students to feel safe and happy.
