UOSM 2008 Summary Topic 1

All participants of the curriculum innovation module UOSM 2008: Living and Working on the Web were asked to consider and explain the concept of digital ‘visitors’ and ‘residents’ drawing upon our own online experiences to date. Each student posted their thoughts and findings on their respective blog, these posts were then aggregated into the main University administered blog and discussion between students ensued. Summarising Topic 1

Despite having seen my fellow classmates interpretations of ‘Visitors and Residents’, my opinion has remained the same. I maintain that White’s (2011) ‘Residents and Visitors’ Model is far too simplistic. I still believe that Horrigan’s (2007) typology is a far more effective way to categorise users. Since writing my blog however, I have come across Madden’s (2013) study on the technology use of different income groups. Continue reading →

Digital Visitors and Residents

As we advance through the digital age, the internet is indisputably an intrinsic feature of many of our routines, and it seems that some of us are more immersed than others. The alleged digital native/immigrant divide (Prensky, 2001), appropriates age in order to categorise our online proficiency. Digital natives or the ‘N-gen’ grew up with the internet and possess a superior understanding of its concepts, hence renovating their attitude to education and socialisation. Continue reading →

“War between natives and immigrants is ending. The natives have won” – CNN, 2012. Digital Natives.. The digital age in which we live in is constantly expanding. The use of computers, mobiles, tablets is increasing day by day and our reliance on technology is becoming sequentially larger.
