Topic 2: Reflection

I went into the topic with a very strong opinion that having multiple identities online was not being true to yourself. I believed that having multiple identities online equated to a “lack of integrity”, as mentioned by Mark Zuckerberg (thegurdian.com, 2012). I still do feel that who you are online should be who you are offline. But after reading a few blog post of my classmates, I am able to see the argument from a different perspective and it did change my views on the topic. Continue reading →

Topic 2 – Reflection on multiple online identities

ONLINE IDENTITY – 1 or 2 or 3 or many many many When I got introduced to social media, I only had one identity – me, myself and I. However,  as time goes by, I suddenly had more than 1 identity. WHY? As I grow older, I was exposed to the effects of social profiles. I love how I can post images of my daily life on the social media (refer to image below). However, during the gap year that I took, I was employed by an organisation. Continue reading →

Reflection: Why do we have so many identities?

After reading a few of my peers’ blogs, it is evident that we have similar views and agreement about what online identity is and why do we have multiple identities online. There were many insightful knowledge that speaks to me the advantages as well as the disadvantages of having numerous online identities. I was able to relate to Karise’s blog post as she mentioned that people have multiple personas to specifically target the audience that they want. Continue reading →

Topic 2 : Reflection on ‘Online identities’

The exchange of viewpoints on my classmates’ blogs not only helped me gain deeper insights on this topic, but also challenge me to think deeper on why people start emphasizing on their online identity and the possible underlying reason for them having multiple online identities. Hazel posted a video in her blog that made me realise how people’s online identity were mostly anonymous in the past, and it changed to an online identity that shares about personal life experiences now. A Reflection: Am I really “NOBUSATO” or hiding behind a mask, in the Virtual World (#MANG2049)

|Topic 2| Reflection #MANG2049

So I noticed that my classmates and I have taken rather different approaches for this question, some that I had missed exploring. While my focus was on how having multiple online identities may influence your professional and personal lives, others like Xin Hui, Adelene and Wan Sia brought up issues of cyber bullying, cyber crimes and identity theft as a result of having multiple online identities. Reflection – Topic 2

At the beginning of the chapter, I thought I already had a clear picture of what it means to have multiple online identities. However, upon further readings, I realised I merely knew the tip of the iceberg. I have found out that having multiple online identities does not just mean having separate accounts for social media. It could also mean having different personas and displaying different values. Continue reading →

Yes, we need multiple identities online!

After reading several blog posts by others, I realized majority of us prefer to have multiple online identities. It seems that the way we portray ourselves online reflects our personality and there is a strong need to segregate our professional and personal life. Valarie added that identity and reputation are the essential factors to get a job. She presented certain stats of how employers use social media as a tool for screening candidates. Topic 2: What have I learnt?

After reading the blogposts and comments of my classmates, I realized that whether one chooses to have one or multiple online identities, both options have disadvantages and one must carefully pick the lesser of the two evils. (Source: http://blog.arekibo.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/auth-dialog-example.png) Zaidhan’s post mentioned about how Facebook users frequently use their accounts to register for an external application. Reflection: TOPIC 2

After browsing several classmates’ blog posts, it is evident that the majority agree that the main reason for having several online identities is to differentiate between work and play. Most classmates in fact, do manage more than one online identity, using mainly LinkedIn for professional matters and Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for personal leisure. Continue reading →
