General Feedback Intro Topic

Nicholas Fair February 23, 2018 Leave a comment

After overcoming some technical teething problems and getting your heads around this new way of learning, which involved stepping firmly outside some of your comfort zones, the Intro Topics you posted were mostly good. It was great to see so many of you have a go at creating your own visuals too, well done.

A small number appear to have also been actively commenting on the MOOC, but I’d like to see that number increase significantly please. Well done to Tom Davidson for linking to his blog posts from the MOOC comments sections, thereby linking aspects of the course and his learning network and hopefully driving more comments on his blog.

Here is some feedback from the Intro Topic which you should all consider for your next topic:

  1. Your blog:
  • consider the ease of navigation around your blog
  • make use of the sidebars and widgets available on wordpress to improve your blog and its connectivity to your other social media
  • make sure your blog allows comments (unmoderated) and displays them correctly

2. The initial post

  • a greater depth of understanding of the topic is required – too many people missed the fact that the res-vis framework is a spectrum, not a binary choice.
  • the above would have been helped by researching more, and more widely  – relying only on the starter sources we provide is not sufficient.
  • ALL in-text citations should also be links to the source.
  • ALL images and video needs to have an in-text citation (including citing yourself if you made the visual).
  • ALL videos need to have an entry in the reference list.
  • check grammar and spelling very carefully before publishing.

3. Comments

  • this was the biggest problem area: to be absolutely clear – you need to comment on (at least) 2 other classmate’s blogs. Replying to a comment left on your blog DOES NOT COUNT.
  • provide links to sources which support the critique/point you make in your comments.
  • link directly to the comments you have made, not to the blog homepage.

The reflections were generally good.

The practice run is now over and next time (Topic 1) will start to count towards your module grade – so make it the best you can!
