And now, the end is near….Cora reflects on her Mission Employable internship

One of the many Mission Employable marketing materials that Cora has created.

So, here I am, a week away from finishing the Mission Employable internship, and things are looking pretty good! The office is feeling a bit lonely as Bobbi has used her leave to have a breather from all of her hard work and celebrate at Bestival festival. I should probably have used my leave to do something equally exciting rather than catch up on Great British Bake Off whilst eating my body weight in ice cream…

Anyway, before I veer dangerously off subject, I shall return to the employability module! Bobbi and I have finished the materials for the year one and two employability module- all of the lectures, tasks, Blackboard materials, handouts and videos- meaning that we are spending the last week tying up loose ends and producing some promotional material for Mission Employable.

The internship has been so varied: we have created lectures, discovered new digital tools such as PowToon and Haiku Deck, met with staff from all over the University and are now going to do filming and editing to produce the first video for the Mission Employable YouTube channel. Through learning about how to increase other students’ employability, I have improved my own by building my awareness of the graduate job market and being pushed out of my technophobe ways to create a Twitter and LinkedIn account. I leave this internship feeling much more confident about entering the world of work and – something I thought I would never say – using technology to further my career. I hope the students learning from the lectures and resources we have made will feel the same when they finish the module.

So, as a final sign off, if you are a current University of Southampton student, get involved in all that Mission Employable has to offer! You could be networking with all sorts of interesting employers, mentoring a group of first years, listening to an inspiring alumni talk, working at your dream internship, relaxing on a private yacht in the Caribbean…

OK, Mission Employable may not bring you the last point, but it will help you secure the graduate job you want, and that’s one step closer to affording a luxurious holiday, right?

See- I am using the persuasive skills I have learnt through Mission Employable already!

Cora
