Farewell UOSM2008

When starting UOSM2008 I had no idea what to expect. I originally chose to do this module because I wanted to learn something new and test myself out of my comfort zone. And fortunately, this has turned out to be one of my favourite modules. I have learnt things that translate into real life not just university. Continue reading →

Topic 5 reflection

I enjoyed researching this week’s topic as I felt I could fully relate as I am sure most of the people writing this week could. Being a student it is hard to try to find relevant readings for your work as is and if you do find one and you cannot access it, it is annoying and disappointing.   Louise mad some good points in her blog about this, stating that it is a right to have access to educational resources. The advantages and Disadvantages of Open access

What is meant by open access? Open access is free immediate access to articles free to all people all over the world, to make research literature more available. Here is a short video to explain more. An example of open access are Open educational resources, or OER’s. OER’s are textbooks, research articles, videos, assessments and simulations that are licensed under an open copyright licence, or public domain. Continue reading →

topic 4 reflection

This topic of ethics around social media in educations was one that I personally felt passionate about. My mother works as a student support officer in a secondary school and has had to deal with so many cases of student who have suffered either cyber bullying or online abuse. It can have major effects on people’s mental health and is a serious problem that need more attention in schools. Continue reading →

Ethical issues of social media

Social media and having a social media account has become the norm in society today, this norm has been reproduced so that school children will now likely have an account of their own on a form of social media. I remember begging my mum to let me have a Facebook account when I was 12, even though the age requirement was 16 at the time. This leads me on to the topic of this week’s blog post, the  issues of social media, and I will be looking particularly at school children. Continue reading →

Reflection Topic 3

This topic on building a professional profile got me thinking about how I should start to think about creating my own online professional profile. Therefore, I have now started to create my own linked in account so I can start to acquire some useful insight into what looking for a job online will be like for the future, because so far, I have just had part time jobs advertised in windows, not online. Having an online professional profile

Being authentic online is largely debated as can be seen in Topic 2. However, when it comes to being a professional it is important to provide a good representation of yourself that is true to who you are. Having an online professional profile is an important way of getting ‘your foot in the door’ and finding new jobs in today’s modern society, many employers post on different platforms of social media about new jobs. Topic 2 Reflection

This week’s topic of having multiple online identities was something had never previously thought deeply into. However, after reviewing the topic it has been made clear there are many strong opinions on whether people should be allowed to have more than one ‘authentic’ identity online. Like most people my age I am online every day and on many websites ‘cookies’ pop up, before this topic I never really thought twice about what they meant. Continue reading →

Should we have multiple online identities?

With the development of the internet over the past few years, having a social media account has become the norm for most people in society. Most people will have a Facebook or Twitter account as a way of keeping in the loop, as well as having this personal account it is now common that people will also have a professional online identity more appropriate for a professional lifestyle. Therefore providing the opportunity for multiple online identities. Continue reading →

Reflection on Topic 1

Reading through the blog posts, it can be seen that the general opinion is that Prensky’s original idea of digital ‘natives’ and ‘immigrants’ is an outdated and not inclusive of all people. Learning about the topic of digital visitors and residents has opened my eyes to a whole new way of thinking about the online world. Initially I did not fully understand the topic and it took a good few readings to help me grasp the concept. Continue reading →
