Graphic Landscape in Cities: Decoding the Identity and Meaning of Chinatowns in London, Manchester, and Liverpool

WSA PhD Seminar Series, 21 May 2025 (Location: PGR Rooms and MS Teams)

In this session Dr Pan will speak to us about her recently-completed PhD research, exploring and interpreting the semiotic meaning-making of graphic landscaping in four Chinatowns in the UK. Her PhD bridged the disciplinary connection between semiotics and graphic design for broader interdisciplinary consideration.

Dr Angelina Pan is an interdisciplinary design researcher whose work spans the fields of Graphic Design, Urban Design, Cultural Heritage Studies, Social Semiotics, and Sociolinguistics. Her research explores the semiotic meaning-making of graphic communication in cities and aims to understand how everyday graphic communication contributes to the creation of resilient and revitalised urban environments, as well as promote cultural diversity, social inclusion, and ethnic equality for both Chinese migration and British mainstream communities. Following her presentation, she welcomes questions and discussion, with the hope of supporting PGRs in understanding the transition from doctoral researcher to academic staff.
