ATBEST Conference, Linkoping, Sweden – 7/8 September 2016
ATBEST – Advanced Technologies for Biogas Efficiency, Sustainability and Transport – is hosting an international conference at Linköping Concert and Congress to explore how we can maximise the efficiency and sustainability of the Biogas supply chain.
The conference will comprise presentations from leading academics and industry experts on the following topics:
- Feedstocks and digestion
- Process monitoring
- Upgrading and supply
- Optimum biogas utilisation
The 2 day programme will also include delegate presentations, networking opportunities and an industry led workshop focusing on the biogas market for the future.
Those interested in presenting will be invited to submit their abstracts in early 2016. Deadline for submissions will be 30 April 2016.
For further information please register your interest with the ATBEST team atbest@qub.ac.uk
Funded by the European Union, the ATBEST Marie Curie ITN is a collaboration between eight partners located in the UK, Ireland, Germany and Sweden. The project tackles several key research challenges along the biogas supply chain, improving its competitiveness with respect to fossil derived fuels and increasing the sustainability of the biogas industry in Europe.

24th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition – Amsterdam, 6-9 Jun 16
The European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (EUBCE) is a world class annual event which has been held at different venues throughout Europe since 1980.
It is Europe’s largest international conference focused on biomass combining a highly-respected international scientific conference with an industrial exhibition and gathers participants from research, industry, policy and business of biomass.
With the growth of anaerobic digestion, there is ample opportunity to showcase research. Abstract submission closes 30 October 15 and further information can be found here.
IEA Bioenergy Task 37 Country Reports Summary 2014
For those of you not aware of this, the IEA Task 37 website has a number of useful resources, not least of which are the Country Reports which summarise activity in member countries over the given period.
Task 37 members recently published an annual summary of their Country Reports for 2014. The individual country reports include information on the number of biogas plants in operation, biogas production data, biogas utilisation, number of upgrading plants, number of vehicles using biomethane as fuel, details of financial support mechanisms and some information on key national research and development projects.
Biogas in smart energy grids
Task 37 recently published a technical brochure on “A perspective on the potential role of biogas in smart energy grids”. Increased generation of electricity from wind and solar installations is leading to challenges in terms of balancing electricity demand with supply and managing the increasing occurrences of surplus electricity. Biogas systems can facilitate increased proportions of variable renewable electricity on the electricity grid mainly through use of two different technologies: demand driven biogas systems which increase production of electricity from biogas facilities at times of high demand for electricity, or temporary storage of biogas at times of low electricity demand; and power to gas (P2G) systems when demand for electricity is less than supply of electricity to the electricity grid, allowing conversion of surplus electricity to methane.
