Open Access, Good or Bad?

Image Source: http://allthefreethings.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/logo.jpg In our modern age, almost all of us have a smartphone which has internet access. This would mean that technology has enabled us to have almost instant access to many information online for free. But have we ever thought of the fact on open access? Open access is defined as in short “unrestricted, online access to peer reviewed and published scholarly research papers”. Continue reading →

Well, certainly all the consumers but maybe not all the producers of the content. “Nothing of value is free. Even the breath of life is purchased at birth only through gasping effort and pain.” - Robert A. Continue reading →

Reflection: Topic 5 – Open Access

Having taken for granted on open access, I was totally unaware of its advantages and disadvantages. I’ve spent more than half my life studying, getting resources off the Internet and even downloading them. Like many others, I’ve encountered numerous ‘restricted zones’, limiting access only if I pay a price. It’s really frustrating especially after reading part of the context. Continue reading →

Review: Is this free? Can I get it for free?

This topic has really got a discussion going on where there are many different views on whether content should be made available online for free. Siew Woon has stated that “Knowledge should be free.” and I, too, also believe in that. I could spend a lot of time just surfing the web, reading random articles and blogs, expanding my knowledge. I would hate to imagine where one day, Google or any other search engines were to charge us whenever we wish to search for information online. Continue reading →

Time to pay up!

I used to have about 10,000 subscribers on YouTube before I revealed what software I was using and how I created my videos. After that incident, I thought that sharing is not always caring because people do not remember to give credits. Continue reading →

Open Access – Are you For it, or Against it?

Image Source As a University student faced with reports, projects and a dissertation, the thought of filtering through heavy research and readings can be a drag. However, an absolute frustration is when we finally found suitable content online, yet come up against a paywall. Ever felt this way? I would think so. Paywalls are getting increasingly popular and will continue to be on the rise – 90% of online content will be held behind a paywall in the near future (Stephen Lepitak, 2013). Continue reading →

To Be Free, Or Not To Be?

Has this ever happened to you? only to be faced with this? Frustrating isn’t it?  Don’t you just hate this page?? Have you ever wondered why though? There’re both sides to a coin. We want the article for academic purposes to get a good grade. Publishers want compensations for his article for the effort, time and money he have put into his research. Rather fair don’t you think? Open Access VS Paid Access The term is Paid Access (a.k.a. Continue reading →
