New report presents language learning issues facing the UK

The Guardian has published an article discussing the ‘seven big language learning issues facing the UK’, highlighted in the recent ‘Living Languages’ report. The report presents some of the key areas of debate that have resulted from the two-year ‘Case for Language Learning’ project, undertaken by the Guardian and the British Academy, which aimed to explore the reasons for the UK’s shortage of foreign language skills. New Lifelong Learning Modern Languages evening classes to start

If you have recently taken the ‘A’ and ‘B’ Lifelong Learning language evening course, now is the perfect time to expand your skills! University of Southampton Lifelong Learning has launched its programme for the coming semester, to include language stage ‘C’ classes in a range of languages. ‘Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching’ – MOOC starts next week

Modern Languages at Southampton will be relaunching the University of Southampton MOOC, ‘Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching’ on Monday 20 April, following its successful first run in November 2014. This four-week course will introduce participants to the field of second language learning, consider language classrooms and the role of teaching in language learning, and explore the uses of technology in teaching. Centre for Global Englishes seminar: “English as a Lingua Franca in Asia: Suggestions for ELT/ELF Policy and Pedagogy”

The next Centre for Global Englishes (CGE) seminar will take place on Wednesday 22nd April 2015 from 5:00 – 6:30pm in Lecture Theatre C, Building 65, Avenue Campus. New MOOC on ‘Dyslexia and language teaching’ to be launched

Lancaster University is launching a new four-week MOOC on ‘Dyslexia and language teaching’, which will run from 20 April – 17 May 2015. Aimed at English language teachers, teachers of modern languages, teacher trainers, educators and trainee teachers, the course will enable its participants to reflect on how they can cater for the needs of students with dyslexia in the foreign/second language classroom. EMMA – multilingual access to European MOOCs

The EMMA (European Multiple MOOC Aggregator) project team has recently published its March 2015 newsletter, providing an update on developments on the EMMA project, including a new round of MOOCs launched in February, and updates to the platform. The EMMA initiative is a 30 month pilot project supported by the EU, aiming to provide a system for the online delivery of MOOCs in multiple languages from different European universities. Get Ready for Southampton 2015 launches!

Yesterday the eLanguages team in Modern Languages launched the 2015 edition of the free online course Get Ready for Southampton. This course aims to show what life and study is like for international students at the University of Southampton, and provides an opportunity for students to network prior to arrival.
