Modern Languages to welcome Year 12 students for Study Day

Modern Languages will welcome 40 Year 12 students from 6 schools across the south east to Avenue Campus next Wednesday 18th January for a Year 12 Study Day. This will be the first of two events in the year for Year 12 students to think about studying languages at university. There will be sessions on cultural topics, grammar and speaking in French, German or Spanish, plus the chance to do an ab initio session in another language (such as Chinese or Portuguese). Spanish hip hop artist El Chojín to visit Southampton

El Chojín — one of the biggest names in Spanish hip hop — will be visiting the Music department at Southampton on Thursday 1st December 2016, and speaking about his work from 3-5pm in Room 1077, Building 6 (Nuffield Theatre). El Chojín is known for both his social critique and for holding the Guinness World Record for the most syllables rapped in one minute. He will be accompanied by Dr Stuart Green, researcher of Spanish hip hop and racism at the University of Leeds. Continue reading →

Modern Languages staff receive teaching award

Modern Languages’ Carmen Martín de León and Cristina García Hermoso have been awarded second place for best Spanish teachers of the year, in the international congress, IV Congreso Internacional del Español en Castilla y León. The innovative teaching project they presented, which was also praised by our Stage 5 students this academic year, was based on Carmen’s published book series, El Mundo de Custodio. Modern Languages offers Lifelong Learning intensive summer courses

Lifelong Learning at the University of Southampton has announced that it will be offering a 15-hour intensive language programme this summer, which will take place over five evenings between Monday 27th June and Wednesday 15th July, between 18:00 and 21:00. The course is aimed at those with no prior knowledge of the language, and will focus on skills required in a range of everyday situations. Continue reading →

Future Modern Languages students to attend Routes into Languages Study Day

Over 100 Year 12 students and their teachers will be visiting the University’s Avenue Campus on Tuesday 19 January 2016 to participate in a Routes into Languages Study Day. Students will participate in sessions on cultural topics, grammar and speaking in French, German or Spanish, and will have the chance to do an ab initio session in Chinese or Portuguese.
