An Alternative Logic of Giving Through Art in Participatory Art Practice
My practice based PhD research project examines participatory art practice through the lens of gift economy and attempts to investigate the mechanism and implications of exchange that takes place between the artist and audience. Gift-giving is a social act that takes us outside ourselves and puts in contact with the other. As a result, the question of the gift presents a political question addressing fundamental issues concerning the way human beings should treat one another. My research and artist-led participatory art projects aim to position art as a site of alternative giving, offering humanistic potentials of connecting people in affirmative ways.
