Post-Global Luxury: Handicraft in Sri Lanka
My PhD explores the idea of post-global luxury: namely instances of luxury that contrast with the discourse around the dominant market of global luxury brands. In recent history, largely due to the impact of globalization, an understanding of luxury has come to be characterised by the eponymous and pervasive presence of these brands around the world. However, within certain locations and instances – particularly where the influence of globalization is not as widely felt – luxury must exist in different forms: a phenomenon that this project will entitle post-global luxury. Using Sri Lankan handicraft as a case study, this project will examine the production of post-global luxury within a local market without a significant presence of global luxury brands.
