Towards a brighter future

Here’s a summarise Slide on Topic 5! Click here for the full slide! Why space? Because this topic was such a foreign one for me, I would never have thought about Open access from the author’s point of view. I feel that for open access to survive, we need to haveĀ more incentives for authors to provide their materials for free! It’s funny how some people can be so willing to spend $25 for a meal yet not for a $0. Continue reading →

Useful Free Information Perhaps?

And here we are, at the final reflection. It was really interesting to read the different viewpoints of my peers and also many of them introduced new platforms what I wasn’t aware of previously – Open Access and Coursera. (When free information was mentioned, the first web I remembered was Wikipedia) Both Open Access and Coursera provides free information to users, making it convenient for users to retrieve information they need. Types of Paywall | Inevitable

Image from Giphy After reading mostĀ of my peers’ posts, there was a unanimous decision that online materialĀ would benefit society and users if it were free online. However, taking this into consideration, whether it is the public or individuals, there will most likely be a party, which has to pay for the materials in order for it to be available. Topic 5: Reflective Summary

Open access is an progress as the advancement of technology. Before I have a look of my classmates’ posts, I think open access is something sounds nice but probably can not sustainable in the long run. Just like the development of social media, the culture needs to exposure and flow. The ways of distributing knowledge is cheaper than old times, no matter use Skype, reading news online instead of newspaper, or get a pdf copy instead of printed copy etc. Continue reading →

Andā€¦itā€™s reflection time again!

Yet another eye-opening topic! Once again, there are a variation of issues posted by my peers which I learnt from! Through Corrine’s reflection post, I was opened up to these concepts in which I have made use of a Prezi as a mind-map to present: Click on the picture to get a clearer view! Kamil MizeraĀ suggested that bothĀ conceptsĀ are complementary (Kamil Mizera,2013). Hence, as this movement further develops, I think there is a possibility of a merge between the two concepts. Topic 5 Reflection

The argument for and against Open Access in the perspectives of content producers is a really difficult one. There are just too many factors. As Wen Hui noted in her post, whether Open Access can be advantageous or disadvantageous to content producers would depend on their motivation behind producing content. (eg, for money or for publicity, etc). This point was also echoed in Charmaineā€™s post, when she challenged her readers to ā€œrethink the reason why we are sharing in the first placeā€. Flawed concept?

The argument with regards to the ā€œopennessā€ of the Internet has sparked many different views based on the differing perspectives, be it in terms of a content producer or even the audience itself. I must admit the #crossover between the group in Singapore and UK really broaden the scope of the subject! (Credits to Ebrahim for the suggestion!) As I took on the subject in a general approach, it was fascinating to gain insights from the group in UK. Continue reading →

THUS, IT ALL DEPENDSā€¦

It is interesting to see that many of the peers created their own videos to make their blog post interesting. Therefore, I have also created for this reflection post. Many of the peers support open access as the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. However, there are also a number of the peers who disagree that content producers should provide their work online for free. Continue reading →
