Looking Back & Forward

Good afternoon! The last 12 days of intense assignments was a new and enriching experience. Before MANG2049, I didn’t update my LinkedIn profile. After learning that 97% of recruiters use LinkedIn to search for talent, I realized the importance of a digital professional profile and updated my LinkedIn profile. I started to find ex-colleagues and friends to make new connections and widen my network. Continue reading →

Reflection: Open Access

Open access (OA) is the “free, immediate, online availability of research articles, coupled with the rights to use these articles fully in the digital environment”. (SPARC) Artificial barriers are maintained by legacy publishers, restricting access. This fundamental mismatch between what is possible with digital technology and outdated publishing system led to the call for OA. Access Granted!

What does it mean for content producers to “make their materials freely available online”? Take a look at this video explaining open access (OA) : While open access unlocks the door to free learning, 90% of online content would likely be held behind a paywall in the coming years (Lepitak), restricting lower to middle income groups. Advantages to OA Content Producers The increase in citations of publications is due to availability, accessibility and distribution of content (Mizera). Continue reading →

Reflection: Social Media Ethical Issues

Good afternoon! Today’s post will summarize what I have learnt about ethical issues and how it is related to other topics. Social media has the capacity to amuse, inspire and to mobilize support, giving a voice to excluded and powerless people. However, gossip, arguments and abuse are some pitfalls. The questions still remains; what is the balance between the right to free speech and the limits of abuse? (The Guardian) This leads to an important issue of online ethics. Continue reading →

Discuss ONE of the ethical issues raised by educational or business use of social media that you consider to be particularly significant.

Good afternoon! Today I would be discussing an ethical issue raised by business use of social media. To begin with, what is an “unethical behavior”? It’s as simple as knowing the right thing to do, then doing the wrong thing (Shepherd). Identity theft is an example, where 17.6 million Americans were victims of identity theft (BJS, 2014). Nobody wants to go through what Ruth Palmer experienced. Continue reading →

Reflection: Digital Professional Profile

Good evening! Today’s post summarizes what I have researched and read from other classmates’ posts. Creating a Digital Professional Profile (DPP) is important (Widjaya, 2015). After reading my classmates’ posts it is clear that we agreed social media platforms are becoming a channel for more professional usage and to create/maintain one is crucial. I’m guilty of not updating my own LinkedIn profile and this was a great reminder. Continue reading →

Comment on TOPIC 3 – PROFESSIONAL DIGITAL PROFILE by Karise

Hello Nicol! I was interested in your point about ‘privacy’. I do agree that we have to be careful with our privacy settings so the that certain groups of people (bosses/colleagues) won’t see the ‘overly personal’ stuff that we post. But does this affect one’s authenticity? I would call this a grey area because it depends on the extent of what one’s hiding. This is where it led me to about the multiple online identities that we discussed in the previous topics. Continue reading →

Over Here, Hire Me!

Why’s Digital Professional Profile (DPP) Important? In today’s day and age, most people are on social media (Statista), that includes recruiters too! Believe it or not, 93% of them review candidates’ social profile before making a hiring decision (Jobvite, 2014). It’s high time now everyone realizes DPP is a necessity. Continue reading →

Reflection: Digital Identity

Good afternoon! After reading my classmates’ posts on the topic of digital identity, here is what I have learnt In the ever fast-changing world of technology we adapt in ways of connecting with people like never before. Thanks to the internet, users post content anonymously and create multiple identities, while others use their real names. Continue reading →

“Who knows What about you When”?

Good evening readers, let’s start off the week with an interesting topic: online identities. According to Binary Tattoo, digital identity “is the permanent collection of data about us that is available online”. Users of social media present themselves online, by posting opinions, pictures, etc, creating a persona. Other users access these information and form a perception and judgement of the person’s reputation. Continue reading →
