Next CLLEAR seminar: “The Creative Use of Metaphor and Metonymy in Language Learning and Intercultural Communication”

The next Centre for Linguistics, Language Education and Acquisition Research (CLLEAR) seminar will take place on Wednesday 18 November 2015 from 4:00-6:00pm in Lecture Theatre C, Building 65, Avenue Campus. The talk is entitled “The Creative Use of Metaphor and Metonymy in Language Learning and Intercultural Communication” and will be delivered by Professor Jeannette Littlemore from the University of Birmingham. E-Learning Excellence Award for Prepare for Success

Julie Watson from Modern Languages, has been awarded an e-Learning Excellence Award for Prepare For Success, the web-based transition tool for international students coming to study in the UK. The competition for the awards was conducted by Academic Conferences and Publishing International (ACPI). The call for the competition, announced in 2014, attracted 70 submissions from the university environment, business or industry, government departments or schools. Continue reading →

Modern Languages Year Abroad photo competition winners announced

The winners of the first Modern Languages Year Abroad photo competition were announced this week. The competition attracted 93 photo entries from Modern Languages undergraduates, now finalists, who were on their Year Abroad last academic year. There were 7 different categories for entries and students could submit up to three photos. A panel of judges from Modern Languages agreed on one winning photo for each category, and an overall winner was chosen from the category winners. Continue reading →

‘Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching’ MOOC starts on Monday!

Modern Languages at Southampton will be relaunching the University of Southampton MOOC, ‘Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching’ on Monday 19 October, for the third running of the course. This four-week course will introduce participants to the field of second language learning, consider language classrooms and the role of teaching in language learning, and explore the uses of technology in teaching. Visitors from Tomsk Polytechnic University for course in Delivering Through the Medium of English

We are very happy to welcome a group of 12 academics from Tomsk Polytechnic University who are be studying with us for 2 weeks beginning Monday 12 October 2015 through to Friday 23 October 2015. The delegates will be attending a “Delivering Through the Medium of English” course. Cultural Studies and Modern Languages MOOC to be relaunched

The award-winning MOOC ‘Cultural Studies and Modern Languages’ by the University of Bristol goes live for the second time on Monday 12th October 2015. The MOOC, delivered by the Modern Languages department at Bristol, offers a free online introduction to the study of Modern Languages and Cultures, aimed at a sixth-form audience and beyond, and requiring no language other than English to follow it. The first Institute for Language and Culture (ILC) seminar of the semester will take place on Wednesday 30th September 2015 from 4:00-5:30pm in Lecture Theatre C, Building 65, Avenue Campus. Modern Languages launches new eLearning Group

Modern Languages at Southampton has recently launched an eLearning Group, consisting of staff members from across the department with an interest in eLearning and blended learning. The group aims to enable it members to meet on a regular basis, explore how colleagues are making use of online tools in their day-to-day teaching and share best practice in this area. The group has a blog, which presents examples of pedagogic research into blended learning from across the department. Continue reading →
