Prepare for Success update

The eLanguages team in Modern Languages at the University of Southampton has just completed a major update of the free learning resources on the Prepare for Success website, as it celebrates reaching 1,000 fans on Facebook, in addition to over 2,700 followers on Twitter. Professor Mike Kelly appointed ‘Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres’

Professor Mike Kelly from Modern Languages at the University of Southampton has been appointed a ‘Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres’ by the French government. This is in recognition of his contribution to promoting French language and culture in particular and language diversity more generally. It is unusual for this honour to be awarded to academics, as it is intended to recognise public impact in the cultural field. Continue reading →

WorldCALL2013 Conference, 10-13 July

The WorldCALL2013 Conference will be taking place in Glasgow from 10-13 July 2013. WorldCALL aims to enhance computer-assisted language learning (CALL) in the global community by bringing language educators in higher education around the world together. The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Sustainability and CALL’. A number of the sessions will involve practical demonstrations of courseware and other technology that will be of interest to teachers in secondary and further education. Continue reading →

More future Modern Languages students to visit the University

More potential future Modern Languages students will be visiting the University on Wednesday 19th June 2013 for the Year 12 Languages Study Day, run by Modern Languages at the University of Southampton. The event is for Year 12 students who are thinking about studying languages at university. There are sessions on cultural topics, grammar and speaking in French, German or Spanish, plus the chance to do a taster class in a new language and attend a talk on languages and careers. Future Modern Languages students to visit the University

More potential future Modern Languages students will be visiting the University on Tuesday 11th June 2013 for the Year 8 Able Linguists Day, run by Modern Languages at the University of Southampton. The event provides year 8 pupils with the chance to develop their language skills further. Activities include an intensive mini-project in either French, German or Spanish, a taster session in a new language, plus a talk about languages and how they can be useful in the world of work. Visit to Humanities/Modern Languages by delegation from Zhejiang University, China

On Thursday 30 May, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Vice Chancellor and senior representatives of Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. Zhejiang is one of the foremost research led universities in China; the Faculty of Arts and Humanities has research and teaching in linguistics, English language and literature, French, German and Japanese, among other subjects.
