Modern Languages at the University of Southampton has recently welcomed a new Chair in Applied Linguistics, Professor Roumyana Slabakova, to the department. Professor Slabakova’s research and teaching expertise focuses on syntax, pragmatics, and the second language acquisition process. UCAS statistics reveal languages decline

The Times Higher Education has reported on new research revealing that the proportion of 18 year olds applying for non-European language degrees has fallen by more than a third in three years. The research, conducted by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), has also shown that from 2010 to 2013, there was a 16.7 per cent fall in demand for European language and literature university programmes. New Lifelong Learning languages courses announced for 2013/2014

Lifelong Learning at the University of Southampton has announced an expanded programme for the coming academic year, including a range of languages evening classes to suit all abilities from complete beginner to advanced conversationalist. Classes in 2013/2014 include Arabic, English as a foreign language, French, German, Greek, Mandarin Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Continue reading →

Language Clubs starting October

Lifelong Learning at the University of Southampton is launching a new Language Club scheme, designed for language enthusiasts (French, Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese and English Language) who are keen to improve their existing language skills. New Integrated Masters programme in Languages (MLang)

From September 2013, new Southampton Modern Languages students will have the option to take a four year Integrated Masters. This is a new and distinctive programme which will run in parallel to the University’s BA Modern Languages programmes. The MLang leads to a full Masters award and offers the same choice and flexibility as the BA programmes together with a full year abroad. It also has the same funding options. Continue reading →

Future potential Modern Languages students to attend University Open Days

Hundreds of future potential Modern Languages students will be visiting the University of Southampton on Friday 5th July and Saturday 6th July for the University Open Days.
