ICT and Languages Conference: 8-9 February 2014

The fourth ICT and Languages Conference, entitled ‘Putting the pedagogy in the technology’, is taking place on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 February 2014 at the Avenue Campus, University of Southampton. The conference attracts delegates from across the UK, as well as a large online following on Twitter. Aimed at school teachers, the sessions enable delegates to get a feel for how technology is being used in primary and secondary classrooms. Continue reading →

‘Monsters!’ Study Day on Saturday 25 January

Academics from Modern Languages at the University of Southampton will be participating in a one-day cultural event at the University’s Avenue Campus on Saturday 25 January, entitled ‘Monsters!’. At this thought provoking conference, experts from Modern Languages, Film, History and the John Hansard Gallery will be leading a series of short talks, offering participants the opportunity to learn and engage in discussion about monsters. Online pen pal platform for young language learners launched

The Pie News has reported on the launch of a new free language exchange platform, designed to connect teenagers around the world. Produced by a team of Spanish-based developers in 2013, ‘Blabloo’ has already attracted over 1,000 users. It aims to increase access to language learning by removing cost barriers and attract at least 100,000 young people to its service by the end of this year. Continue reading →

EU competition launched to find UK’s Languages Undergraduate of the Year

EU Careers are sponsoring a competition to find the UK’s Languages Undergraduate of the Year. The competition is open to current undergraduates from any year studying any degree subject but they must also be able to speak a second language (French or German if the student’s first language is English). In addition to language skills, applicants should be motivated, have very good interpersonal skills and an excellent academic record. Continue reading →

‘Teaching in higher education through the medium of English’ courses

The University of Southampton will be running a number of courses in “Teaching in higher education through the medium of English” over the coming year. Dates for the next two courses are 20th–24th January 2014 and 31st March–4th April 2014. These five-day courses are designed for academics in universities across the world whose first language is not English and who are delivering degree programmes and presenting research through the medium of English.
