More future Modern Languages students to visit the University

Around 100 potential future Modern Languages students will be visiting the University’s Avenue Campus on Wednesday 18th June 2014 for the Year 12 Summer Study Day. Sessions will cover cultural topics, grammar and speaking in French, German or Spanish, as well as the chance to try Chinese or Portuguese. There will also be opportunities for participants to talk to current students about studying languages at university and the year abroad. Continue reading →

Future Modern Languages students to visit the University

Around 190 potential future Modern Languages students will be visiting the University on Tuesday 10th June 2014 for the Year 8 Able Linguist Day, run by Modern Languages at the University of Southampton. Activities include an intensive mini-project in either French, German or Spanish, a taster session in a new language, plus a talk about languages and how they can be useful in the world of work. Top four position for modern languages and linguistics at Southampton in Guardian University Guide

Modern languages and linguistics at the University of Southampton has been placed in 4th position in the UK this year in the Guardian University Guide, after Cambridge, Oxford and Surrey. Southampton also received the joint highest score in the table for student satisfaction with teaching. This is the eighth year that Modern Languages has appeared in the top 5 in this table, which is specifically focused on learning and teaching, student satisfaction and careers. Continue reading →

Course for international academic staff in English as a Medium of Instruction

Modern Languages at Southampton is running an intensive two-day course on Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th June 2014, designed for international academics whose first language is not English and who are delivering degree programmes and presenting research through the medium of English. Modern Languages singers participate in University of Southampton Voices performance

Earlier this month, a number of staff from Modern Languages at Southampton participated with colleagues and students in a performance by the University of Southampton Voices, the University’s community choir, led by Harvey Brough. The performance, which told the incredible story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, was a great success, attracting a large audience to St Michael’s Church in Southampton. Continue reading →

Modern Languages’ Alessia Plutino recognised in Excellence in Teaching Awards

Alessia Plutino, an Italian tutor from Modern Languages at Southampton, was recognised for her work this week at the Excellence in Teaching Awards (ETAs), hosted by the University’s Student Union. Alessia’s work with Twitter and new technologies was acknowledged twice, first with an award in the innovative teaching category for the Faculty of Humanities, and then with a high commendation for the overall University prize.
