Modern Languages staff participate in successful LangOER webinar

Kate Borthwick from Modern Languages was amongst a panel of speakers in a webinar earlier this month entitled ‘Open Educational Resources for less used languages in an increasingly digital everyday culture: What are the challenges and how will we tackle them?’ Around 70 participants were involved in the live event, in which Sylvi Vigmo from the University of Gothenburg and Anna-Comas Quinn from the Open University also presented. New Italian film season begins on Monday 6 October

Modern Languages’ new Italian film season will begin on Monday 6 October 2014 with a showing of L’imbroglio nel lenzuolo (Alfonso Arau, 2010) in Lecture Theatre A, Avenue Campus, at 6:30pm. The autumn season promises an inspiring selection of films, old and new, covering different genres and subject matters. All films are introduced in Italian by a tutor, a student or a guest speaker, and are followed by a brief discussion (in Italian and English). Continue reading →

Free language courses for new Southampton students

This academic year, the University is offering all new students the chance to study a language for free through a new scheme called the Southampton Language Opportunity. This scheme will enable students interested in language study to choose from a range of languages and types of course to undertake alongside their degree programme. Julie Watson and Kate Borthwick are amongst colleagues from Modern Languages attending the 2014 Eurocall conference, taking place from 20-23 August 2014 at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. Professor Mike Kelly from Modern Languages at Southampton was answering questions yesterday from students interested in studying or working abroad as part of the launch of a new website called TYA Answers, created by Lizzie Fane, the founder of thirdyearabroad.com. Funded by HEFCE through the Routes into Languages initiative, TYA Answers is dedicated to supporting students who have questions about studying or working abroad during their degree.
