Modern Languages eLearning Group launched

Modern Languages has launched a new eLearning Group. The Group has a blog which will feature the eLearning projects that our staff are engaged in, and report on our wide-ranging research and publications in this area. Some of the subjects being covered include the TwitTIAMO Project; Get Ready for Languages; free Digital Literacies learning resources, an Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching MOOC; our online MA in ELT programme and blogging from abroad. LLAS publishes free, open access ebook to celebrate 10th elearning symposium

LLAS (Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies) in Modern Languages at Southampton has recently published a free, open access ebook: “10 Years of the LLAS elearning symposium: case studies in good practice”. Future Modern Languages students to attend Routes into Languages Study Day

Approximately 100 Year 12 students will be visiting the University’s Avenue Campus on Wednesday 17 June to participate in a Routes into Languages Study Day. Students will participate in sessions on cultural topics, grammar and speaking in French, German or Spanish, and will have the chance to do an ab initio session in Chinese or Portuguese. Book your intensive language summer course now!

Don’t forget to book your place on one of this year’s University of Southampton Lifelong Learning Modern Languages intensive summer courses before the booking deadline of 19 June. Courses are 15 hours in total. They are aimed at learners with no knowledge of the language, and are particularly useful for those who need the skills to survive in the country in different everyday situations. Continue reading →

Next iPad Coffee Club

Modern Languages staff and students with an interest in technology enhanced teaching and learning may be interested in joining the next iPad coffee club, taking place at Avenue Campus on Wednesday 10th June at 10am, on the sofas near reception, outside Avenue cafĂ©. This is an informal event supported by the Institute for Learning Innovation and Development, providing an informal forum for staff and students to discuss a range of learning and teaching resources available via tablet devices. Modern Languages Employability Gala

Students of Modern Languages are invited to the Modern Languages Employability Gala, taking place this Thursday 30 April 2015 in Lecture Theatre B and the cafĂ© on Avenue Campus. An alumni panel will begin at 6pm, when Modern Languages alumni who are now working for NGOs, multinational companies, the Civil Service, charities and more will present on their career experiences thus far, and will explain how the skills they learnt at Southampton have helped them. Centre for Global Englishes seminar: “Reconceptualising grammar for a pedagogy of Global Englishes”

The next Centre for Global Englishes (CGE) seminar will take place on Wednesday 29th April 2015 from 5:00 – 6:30pm in Lecture Theatre C, Building 65, Avenue Campus.
