Workshop on digital tools in language learning research

The Centre for Applied Language Research ran a successful half day workshop at Avenue Campus on Wednesday 10 April, introducing c50 PGR students and other interested researchers to a range of digital tools which can support  the study of informal language learning during residence abroad. First of all, Kevin McManus and Nicole Tracy-Ventura (Southampton) gave a demonstration of CHILDES programs and their uses in coding and analysing transcripts of L2 learner talk. Continue reading →

New app to support Manx language revival

The BBC has reported on a new app launched to help people learn the ancient Manx language. Since being declared extinct in 2009 by UNESCO, the past three years have seen a revival in Manx Gaelic, one of the six Celtic languages alongside Irish, Scots Gaelic, Welsh, Breton and Cornish. The design for the Learn Manx app is based on a current course run by the Manx Heritage Foundation. It is hoped that the app will bring the language into the 21st Century and encourage more people to learn it. Continue reading →

Thousands of language apps!

A search on the word ‘languages’ in Google Playstore which provides apps for Android devices, gives 18,647 results. You can find apps from Arabic, Chinese and Czech to Russian, Serbian and Ukrainian. There are voice translator apps, dictionary and grammar apps and even languages in a month apps. A search on the iTunes App store under the Education category gives lower numbers but reveals many more when you search by language. Continue reading →

The European Commission stresses its commitment to promoting multilingualism in a press statement to celebrate the European Day of Languages on the 26th of September. The EU currently spends around 1 billion euros a year on language related initiatives such as Erasmus which allows higher education students to spend part of their studies or training in another country.
