Chineasy: A new method for learning Chinese

The Independent has reported on a new image-led dictionary called ‘Chineasy’ that has recently been launched by Taiwanese entrepreneur ShaoLan Hsueh. Chineasy is aimed at learners of all ages and uses a building-block principle, which helps learners become familiar with the base characters using fun, eye-catching designs and then combine them to create more complex words and simple phrases. United Nations launches essay contest

The United Nations has launched an essay contest for college and university students which challenges students to write an essay in one of its six official languages on the role of multilingualism in a globalised world. The contest, entitled ‘Many Languages, One World’, supports international education and multilingualism through the continued study of Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. Modern Languages Year 12 Autumn Study Day

Forty potential future Modern Languages students will be visiting the University’s Avenue Campus on Tuesday 5th November 2013 for the Year 12 Autumn Study Day. The event is designed for students who are thinking about studying languages at university. There are sessions on cultural topics, grammar and speaking in French, German or Spanish, as well as the chance to do an introductory session in another language (such as Chinese or Portuguese). On Thursday 30 May, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Vice Chancellor and senior representatives of Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. Zhejiang is one of the foremost research led universities in China; the Faculty of Arts and Humanities has research and teaching in linguistics, English language and literature, French, German and Japanese, among other subjects. Free Peking Opera public workshop and concert

The Tianjin Municipal Youth Peking Opera Troupe will be holding a free public workshop and concert, sponsored by The Confucius Institute and Chinese Art Southampton, on Friday 26th April 2013 in the Turner Sims Concert Hall, University of Southampton. The workshop will run from 11am-12pm and will be followed by the concert from 1pm-2pm.
