The University of Southampton/British Council MOOC ‘Understanding Language: learning and teaching’ starts today (run through FutureLearn). This is the second run for this successful *FREE* online course, which has already attracted over 58,000 learners. This time around, we already have over 30,000 people signed up from more than 115 countries, ready to watch our new live sessions and contribute our discussions. New report presents language learning issues facing the UK

The Guardian has published an article discussing the ‘seven big language learning issues facing the UK’, highlighted in the recent ‘Living Languages’ report. The report presents some of the key areas of debate that have resulted from the two-year ‘Case for Language Learning’ project, undertaken by the Guardian and the British Academy, which aimed to explore the reasons for the UK’s shortage of foreign language skills. And of course I’m sucked into reading some part of the actual thesis, because something captures my attention. New Lifelong Learning Modern Languages evening classes to start

If you have recently taken the ‘A’ and ‘B’ Lifelong Learning language evening course, now is the perfect time to expand your skills! University of Southampton Lifelong Learning has launched its programme for the coming semester, to include language stage ‘C’ classes in a range of languages. Almost all of our students and staff use some form of keyboard nearly every day.  They are indispensable for a whole range of our activities – whether for solo performance or accompaniment, for bands and ensembles, or for working out harmony exercises and new composition ideas. Because keyboards are so central to our programmes, they also represent the largest cost in our performance budget.  We are starting a new funding drive to help. Continue reading →
