Future Modern Languages students to attend Routes into Languages Study Day

Approximately 100 Year 12 students will be visiting the University’s Avenue Campus on Wednesday 17 June to participate in a Routes into Languages Study Day. Students will participate in sessions on cultural topics, grammar and speaking in French, German or Spanish, and will have the chance to do an ab initio session in Chinese or Portuguese. Ask the experts webinar: Working as a translator or interpreter

Routes into Languages is holding a webinar on 10th July at 12:30pm for linguists with an interest in translation and interpreting for the private and public sectors. Aimed at students, teachers and trainers, the webinar will be hosted by a panel of experts including teachers, practitioners, academics and students, who will be answering questions about working as a translator or interpreter. I am also circulating information on the University’s call for new University Strategic Research Groups (USRGs), which bring together researchers from across the University and where collaboration activities are already in place. An update from finalist Catherine Underhill, who has organised our first-ever Grade One-a-thon: So results are in, and I am pleased to announce the results tally to – 14 distinctions 12 merits 5 passes Thank you to all the teachers, especially to those who taught instruments even though they were not participating and learning an instrument themselves – it could not have happened without you. New video – Composing for voices with Finnissy and EXAUDI

Michael Finnissy at Aldeburgh Back in March, our professor of composition Michael Finnissy joined the leading contemporary ensemble EXAUDI for a residency at the Britten-Pears centre at Aldeburgh.  Along with EXAUDI’s director James Weeks and soprano Juliet Fraser, Michael directed a course that gave young composers the chance to work directly with six of the singers from Exaudi in practical sessions as they developed new work and explored the challenges of composing for voices. Don’t forget to book your place on one of this year’s University of Southampton Lifelong Learning Modern Languages intensive summer courses before the booking deadline of 19 June. Courses are 15 hours in total.
