Coming soon – The Trembling Line

We are looking forward to the opening of Aura Satz’s new show at the University’s John Hansard Gallery, running from 3 December 2015 – 23 January 2016.  The show, The Trembling Line, is the result of Aura’s year as Artist in Residence at the university, sponsored by The Leverhulme Trust, and featuring collaboration between the artist, the Department of Music, and the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research. Recent publication: Contemporary Jewish Writing by Andrea Reiter

Significant political events in Austria in the 1980s and 90s not only triggered the first public debate about Austria’s Nazi past but also gave rise to a young vocal generation of Jewish intellectuals, many of whom spearheaded protests against the right-wing populist political forces. More specifically, these developments were triggered by the younger Jews’ dissatisfaction with the response of the generation of Holocaust survivors. Continue reading →

Modern Languages Year Abroad photo competition winners announced

The winners of the first Modern Languages Year Abroad photo competition were announced this week. The competition attracted 93 photo entries from Modern Languages undergraduates, now finalists, who were on their Year Abroad last academic year. There were 7 different categories for entries and students could submit up to three photos. A panel of judges from Modern Languages agreed on one winning photo for each category, and an overall winner was chosen from the category winners. Continue reading →

‘Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching’ MOOC starts on Monday!

Modern Languages at Southampton will be relaunching the University of Southampton MOOC, ‘Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching’ on Monday 19 October, for the third running of the course. This four-week course will introduce participants to the field of second language learning, consider language classrooms and the role of teaching in language learning, and explore the uses of technology in teaching.
