Research grant success for Ying Zheng

Dr. Ying Zheng has been successful in obtaining an award under the British Council East Asia Assessment Research Grants scheme 2014. The title of the project is ‘Aptis in China: Exploring Stakeholders’ Perceptions of its Validity and Practicality’. This project is a collaboration with Dr. Yanyan Zhang, Associate Professor from Wuhan University.  The project aims to investigate Aptis test takers’ perceptions of its validity and test practicality in China. Celebrating Professor Rosamond Mitchell’s academic career at the ‘Language Learning In and Out of the Classroom’ symposium

Staff and students from Modern Languages at Southampton will be amongst participants at a symposium on Wednesday 18th June 2014 entitled ‘Language Learning In and Out of the Classroom’. The symposium will celebrate the academic career of Professor Rosamond Mitchell, paying tribute to her dedication and many achievements in the fields of Education and Applied Linguistics over the past 40 years. Royal Navy and the Caribbean

At a conference in Portsmouth next week, Christer Petley will discuss connections between the Royal Navy and slavery in the Caribbean, focusing on the relationship between Horatio Nelson and Simon Taylor. See this part of the S&R site to view the letter that Nelson sent to Taylor and which William Cobbett posted in his Political Register in February 1807, as part of a last ditch effort to stall the Abolition Bill as it passed through parliament. More future Modern Languages students to visit the University

Around 100 potential future Modern Languages students will be visiting the University’s Avenue Campus on Wednesday 18th June 2014 for the Year 12 Summer Study Day. Sessions will cover cultural topics, grammar and speaking in French, German or Spanish, as well as the chance to try Chinese or Portuguese. There will also be opportunities for participants to talk to current students about studying languages at university and the year abroad. Continue reading →
