Centre for Global Englishes lecture: “Global communicative competence in business – the role of Business English as a Lingua Franca”

The Centre for Global Englishes is hosting a lecture on Wednesday 13th March, 5.00-6.30pm, Lecture Theatre C, Avenue Campus, as part of the Institute of Language and Culture’s visiting scholar programme. The lecture is entitled “Global communicative competence in business – the role of Business English as a Lingua Franca” and will be delivered by Anne Kankaanranta from Aalto University, Finland. Languages at War

Language is an issue in almost every aspect of conflict: in training and preparation for action, in intelligence work, in talking to people on the ground and in different military units communicating with each other. I studied the UN and NATO actions in Bosnia-Herzegovina in the 1990s, when Yugoslavia was breaking up in a messy succession of regional and ethnic conflicts. It started as a peacekeeping operation and ended as a large scale rebuilding of the country. Continue reading →

Portuguese Studies at the University of Southampton will be holding a lecture tomorrow, Thursday 7th March, 18:00-20:00, in Lecture Theatre C, Avenue Campus, entitled “The evolution of the Portuguese Language and the Constitution of the Norm in Modern Portuguese”. Italian film showing today: Ieri, oggi, domani (1963)

The Italian film, Ieri, oggi, domani (Vittorio De Sica, 1963) will be showing in Lecture Theatre A, Avenue Campus, at 6.30pm on Monday 4th March 2013. In questo film De Sica ci racconta la storia di tre donne: Adelina Ăš una venditrice di sigarette di contrabbando a Napoli; Anna Ăš una ricca milanese che si annoia a morte; e Mara Ăš un’allegra prostituta romana. Sono tre episodi diversi e le tre donne rappresentano l’Italia che sta cambiando grazie al boom economico degli anni ’60. Continue reading →
