“Polyglots required if we want a place in the global academy”

Times Higher Education has published an article discussing the need for polyglots if the UK wants a place in the ‘global academy’. “English cannot be the only acceptable language of scholarship, says Toby Miller. Official opening of the University of Southampton Malaysia campus today

The University of Southampton is celebrating today, Thursday 21st March 2013, the official opening of its Malaysia campus, both in the UK and at the new campus in EduCity@Iskandar in South Johor. The Campus welcomed its first students last September to enrol on Southampton’s world-renowned degree in Mechanical Engineering with further programmes to follow including the University’s degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering later this year and opportunities for PhD students as well. Are poor language skills contributing to UK market failure?

The British Academy has published a comprehensive review entitled ‘Languages: the State of the Nation’, which suggests that a poor use of language skills in the UK is contributing to UK market failure. The review draws on research, including a survey of UK employers and labour market intelligence and argues that whilst there is a plentiful supply of multilingual skills in UK society, not enough is being done to tap into this supply. A new tool developed to reconstruct ancient languages

The BBC has reported on a new tool that has been developed that can reconstruct languages that are long-dead. The software, created by researchers at the University of California, is able to rebuild protolanguages – the ancient tongues from which our modern languages evolved. The team tested the system using 637 languages currently spoken in Asia and the Pacific to recreate their early ancestor language.
