Singing in a foreign language helps people learn to speak it

The BBC has reported on a study conducted by researchers at Edinburgh University, which found that singing in a foreign language can help people recall phrases with greater accuracy. In the study, adults who listened who listened to short Hungarian phrases and then sang them back performed better than those who spoke the phrases. In one test, participants who learned through singing performed twice as well as those who learned by speaking the phrases. Continue reading →

New Lifelong Learning languages courses announced for 2013/2014

Lifelong Learning at the University of Southampton has announced an expanded programme for the coming academic year, including a range of languages evening classes to suit all abilities from complete beginner to advanced conversationalist. Classes in 2013/2014 include Arabic, English as a foreign language, French, German, Greek, Mandarin Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Continue reading →

WorldCALL2013 starts tomorrow

The WorldCALL2013 Conference starts tomorrow in Glasgow. WorldCALL aims to enhance computer-assisted language learning (CALL) in the global community by bringing together language educators in higher education around the world. The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Sustainability and CALL’. Colleagues from Modern Languages at Southampton will be attending and presenting on e-learning initiatives at the conference. Language Clubs starting October

Lifelong Learning at the University of Southampton is launching a new Language Club scheme, designed for language enthusiasts (French, Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese and English Language) who are keen to improve their existing language skills. New Integrated Masters programme in Languages (MLang)

From September 2013, new Southampton Modern Languages students will have the option to take a four year Integrated Masters. This is a new and distinctive programme which will run in parallel to the University’s BA Modern Languages programmes. The MLang leads to a full Masters award and offers the same choice and flexibility as the BA programmes together with a full year abroad. It also has the same funding options. Continue reading →

Hundreds of future potential Modern Languages students will be visiting the University of Southampton on Friday 5th July and Saturday 6th July for the University Open Days. More school pupils speaking English as a second language

The Telegraph has reported that the number of schoolchildren speaking English as a second language reached a record high of more than one million this year. Figures show that almost one in five pupils in primary education in the UK speak another language in the home, whilst the proportion of children starting school with English as a second language has doubled since the late 1990s.
