Next TNS Seminar: The Making of Latin American Music: Passion & Subversion

The next TNS seminar will be taking place from 5.00pm-6.30pm on Wednesday 11th December 2013 on the Avenue Campus, Building 65, Room 1145. British Council report on UK language needs

On 20 November the British Council launched a report entitled ‘Languages for the Future: Which Languages the UK Needs and Why’, identifying Spanish, Arabic, French, Mandarin Chinese, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Turkish and Japanese as the languages most vital to the UK over the next 20 years. The report is of interest for all concerned with planning the future of languages and can be downloaded from the British Council website. Continue reading →

Italian film showing today: Una famiglia perfetta (Paolo Genovese, 2012)

The Italian film, Una famiglia perfetta (Paolo Genovese, 2012), will be showing in Lecture Theatre A, Avenue Campus at 6:30pm on Monday 25th November. There will be an introduction by Katie Churchill, Carla Ringland Mendez and Madelaine Mason and a review by Alessia Plutino. New partnership between British Council and University of Southampton to further expand University’s online MA in English Language Teaching

The University’s Modern Languages department has signed a new collaborative agreement with the British Council, which will see further expansion of its online MA in English Language Teaching. The Masters was developed by staff in Modern Languages in collaboration with the British Council distance learning unit in Mexico City. The course has been delivered jointly since 2008, working mainly with Government sponsored Mexican university teaching staff. Continue reading →

Modern Languages welcomes visitors from Tomsk Polytechnic University

Following a visit this time last year from a group of young researchers and academics from Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) in Siberia, Modern Languages is pleased to welcome a further group who are participating in an intensive English language course, ‘Teaching and learning through the medium of English’, from Monday 11th November to Friday 22nd November 2013. United Nations launches essay contest

The United Nations has launched an essay contest for college and university students which challenges students to write an essay in one of its six official languages on the role of multilingualism in a globalised world. The contest, entitled ‘Many Languages, One World’, supports international education and multilingualism through the continued study of Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
