Speaking languages may reduce the risk of dementia

According to a recent study by Harvard Medical School, learning a second language may help delay dementia. The study focused on 648 people from India who had been diagnosed with different types of dementia. Within this group, over half spoke at least two languages. The study found that those who spoke more than one language had developed their symptoms an average of four years later than those who spoke just one language. Reshaping Languages in Higher Education conference: Call for papers

The seventh biennial conference on languages in higher education will be taking place at the Grand Harbour Hotel, Southampton, from 9-10 July 2014. Scholarly and research-informed papers are invited in relation to this theme from colleagues at all stages of their careers in both education and research-led roles. Workshop by Professor Ute Smit: “Methodological issues in longitudinal ELF research: Focus on educational settings”

Professor Ute Smit, currently visiting from the University of Vienna, will be delivering a workshop on Friday 21st February 2014 in Room 1097, Building 65, Avenue Campus on “Methodological issues in longitudinal ELF research: Focus on educational settings”. The workshop is aimed primarily at PhD students, but is also open to other interested researchers. This workshop follows Professor Smit’s talk as part of the CLLEAR/CGE series yesterday. The Phoenix world cinema programme

Students and staff with an interest in modern languages and world cinema may be interested in the second semester programme of The Phoenix, Southampton’s long established film society, showing the best of world cinema. Films are screened weekly in the Southampton University Students’ Union Films Cinema, with English subtitles. ILC visiting scholar Professor Ute Smit, University of Vienna

Professor Ute Smit from the University of Vienna will be visiting the University of Southampton through the Institute for Language and Culture from 19 – 25 February.
