Biofilms Innovation Knowledge Centre Launch – 11 Nov 16 – Register now

BBSRC and Innovate UK would like to announce the launch of the second phase of the UK Biofilms Programme. This will be an approximate £12.5M investment to establish a Biofilms Innovation Knowledge Centre (IKC). The IKC will also be supported by an in-kind contribution of up to £1M worth of High Performance Computing facilities access over five years from the Science and technology Facilities Council (STFC) within the Hartree Centre. The launch event and workshop will take place in London at Amba Hotel Marble Arch on Friday 11 November 2016 from 10.00am to 4pm.

The event will include a series of presentations from Innovate UK and the Research Councils which will provide an overview of the UK Biofilms Programme to date, and specific details on the IKC call opportunity. Importantly, the event will also have dedicated sessions where potential applicants can cover specific questions in detail with the Research Councils and Innovate UK. The Knowledge Transfer Network will also host a workshop session where delegates will get a chance to inform future strategy and plans for the UK Biofilms Programme.

Registraton open: Value Chain of Waste & Bio-resources, Manchester 30 Jun-1 Jul

The BBSRC Integrated Biorefining Research and Technology club (IBTI) and Networks in Biotechnology and Bioenergy (BBSRC NIBB), including ADNet, FoodWasteNet, LBNet and P2P, are hosting a FREE event focussed on addressing issues with the value chain of waste and bio-resources as feedstocks, at the Portland Hotel, Manchester on 30th June-1st July 2016. We will be discussing topics underpinning the value chain of waste feedstocks, particularly aiming to assess the value chain from all perspectives; from the feedstock to the end-product end of the value chain, as well as capturing novel technologies for the future and the challenges with respect to policy and regulation in the utilisation of waste feedstocks. This event will provide a brilliant opportunity to identify and highlight the major roadblocks in utilising waste and bioresource feedstocks and allow for right communities to combine their thoughts and efforts in order to tackle these issues.

 

This event has a maximum capacity and therefore a limited number of spaces are available. Should the number of applicant registrations exceed the maximum attendance, the registrations will be assessed in order to ensure that the most suitable audience is invited to attend.

Bursary placements

The bursary placement scheme aims to allow academics who are not members of IBTI to attend a Dissemination Event and covers cost of attendance at the event (excluding travel).  This is available to individuals who can benefit from interaction with the IBTI community and who also have a contribution to make.  We would in particular like to invite academics who have engaged or attempted to engage with the community.  Recipients will present a poster of relevant research and present a 2 minute poster flash to introduce themselves and their interests.

Round 4 of the Energy Catalyst Now Open

We have not yet heard any further news on the next round of Industrial Biotechnology Catalyst award (see our news here), but Round 4 of the Energy Catalyst is now open. In most cases, Anaerobic Digestion is not applicable to the Energy Catalyst, but proposed solutions can focus on any part of the energy trilemma. Eligibility criteria and further information can be found here.

Note that registration for mid- and late-stage awards closes on 8 Jun 16, with the early-stage award deadline being 7 Sep 16.

Another BIV delivers! A new tool for AD energy requirements

The AD Network funded the University of Southampton and IEA Task 37 (UK) to produce a new program based modelling tool for anyone interested in modelling an AD system. At its simplest, it can be used to calculate potential biogas (and electrical) output for a system, but it is also sophisticated enough to calculated wider energy use and production across a whole system.

The model includes a wide variety of potential AD feedstocks, but users are also able to enter their own values. It is also possible to compare scenarios and to export all the information as a .CSV in order to further manipulate the outputs.

Anaerobic Digestion Network ECR Travel Vouchers Available for Biogas Science: Hungary Aug 16

The Anaerobic Digestion Network is offering a limited number of Travel Bursaries for Early Career Researchers (ECRs) to attend the above event to be held on 21-24th Aug 16 at the University of Szeged in Hungary. The Anaerobic Digestion Network can fund travel and accommodation expenses up to £1500 to present at major events in the AD calendar. RSC Symposium: Renewable chemicals from waste – 20 Nov 15 – London

The Royal Society of Chemistry is holding the above symposium, which looks at “renewable chemicals from waste – securing the molecular value from waste streams”, an initiative supported by the BBSRC.
