Reflection on Topic 5

My comments on Karise’s and Teresa’s blog From my peers’ posts, it seems that the top reason for open access is learning. However, in both education and business contexts, there is no free; it’s just a matter of who’s the payer. Where one gains, the other loses. I’m supportive though, of open access for educational purposes. I think the major problem of introducing paid contents lies in the lack of mutual understanding. Continue reading →

Topic 4: Reflection on Open Access

Considering the pros and cons of Open Access (OA), my opinion of OA being necessary still stands. Having free content available online allows many to benefit from it, especially from an education aspect. Before coming across this topic, I’ve never heard of the term ‘Open Acess’. However, after researching about this topic, I’ve learnt how to appropriately use content online and I’m glad for the existence of OA (as a student). Continue reading →

Reflection: Topic 5

Undoubtedly, many of us including my classmates rely on the use of Open Access (OA) for different purposes – research, music, movies, inspiration, etc. Many take for granted that these information are up for grabs but in reality barriers are put in place before they are within reach. OA easily solves that issue but how are we to pay due respect and credit to these generous content producers is the issue at hand. Wansia shared many benefits along with limitations CP face with OA. Topic 5: A reflection, Open Access: Knowledge with no strings attached (#MANG2049

I am grateful to Open Access (OA). REFLECTION FOR TOPIC 5 – WE SHOULD GET FREE ACCESS

As students, we require FREE ACCESS to articles to aid us in our assignments. However, we might meet paywalls which stops us from accessing information without subscription. (Image from myself, source from http://www.nature.com/nphoton/journal/v4/n5/full/nphoton.2010.2.html)   I would like to EMPHASIS MY SUPPORT for open access materials which provides a more meaningful use of technology to accelerate discovery, increasing exposure to new information. Reflection: Topic 5- For free… really?

When I began exploring this topic I really had no real opinion on the issue of open access probably because I’m not a content producer myself. At least not yet! Nevertheless, as I put myself in the shoes of one through research, I was able to appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of open access. I commented on Shafiq’s and Jeremiah’s posts. Shafiq is an online content producer unlike me and that added value to his outlook on the issue. Continue reading →

Reflection time: Topic 5

Through reading some blogs, I realised that many of us are leaning to OA because as students, we need to have access to these scholarly articles and researches to study. As the video states, lecturers only teach what is readily at hand and that research cannot be push further without sharing materials within a community for it to develop. Continue reading →

Reflection | Topic 5

As an undergrad at the University of Southampton, I’ve had my fair share of searching for academic journals online. Without the availability of free academic writings that I’ve found online, god knows how long it would’ve taken me to look through traditional print journals or how much I would’ve spent on paid journals online instead. Thus, this topic of open access (OA) and freely available online content hits close to home. Open Access Illustration (http://bit. Continue reading →

|Topic 5| Reflection #MANG2049

While the focus of my post was on a business aspect, many of my peers focused on open access on information and research based content. The infographic below is a brief summary of what I have learnt from them. Information from Hazel, Xin Lin, Yong You, Zoey, Maureen and Issac, Infographic created by me using Piktochart. Wanni deduced and I agree that the question behind the accessibility of your content should be ‘what do you want from it’. Continue reading →

Reflection: Paid of Free

The arguments on Open Access (OA) focuses on who can attain this information against why it should be copyrighted, which revolves around cost, ease of access and the legal aspect of re-using the content published. I’ve shared how earnings and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) with regards to the content online that affects creators and readers. Plagiarism is a further step ahead of violating IPR which is shared by Liting. Continue reading →
