My Digital Literacy Journey

After graduating from polytechnic, I had a break. To improve myself, I applied for jobs using a document-based CV (Curriculum Vitae) ā€“ a job application instrument that my polytechnic trained me to do. Looking back, I realised how naĆÆve I was!   Iā€™m not saying that handing in a CV for a job application is bad, Iā€™m saying that handing in a CV is not enough. Then, my social media accounts were spewing with my private life, with hardly anything business-related. Continue reading →

Review: Letā€™s Be Open Aboutā€¦

I came across many petitions worldwide urging signatures to support OA (Open Access). Many of such constituencies can be found online, passionate for this movement. (Picture Source: The White House Petition on Open Access to Research) (Picture Source: EFF Action Petition for Online Access) What fuels this need for the petition? A great takeaway from Kai Yuanā€™s post is that the ā€˜qualityā€™ most people would associate with Non-OA access is subjective. Continue reading →

Letā€™s Be Open Aboutā€¦

Open Access literature is digital, online, free-of-charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. –Peter Suber This translates to online material being shared worldwide without expectation of payment and redistribution is allowed. Itā€™s hard to imagine a digital world without OA (Open Access) today. Most search engines lead you to free scholarly materials under a second. Continue reading →

Review: Realities of Social Media: Trusted VS Tainted

Besides tainted social media marketing, ethical issues such as privacy, bullying, defamation and more were called to attention. (CartoonĀ Source: Pinterest) Easterā€™s indication of lowered privacyā€™s effect between teachers and students could affect the professionalism at hand. Lowered privacy could foster a stronger bonding between teachers and students. With that said, there should be a line drawn. It isnā€™t ethical when the professionalism is compromised. Realities of Social Media: Trusted VS Tainted

Social media, which begun for the sake of convenient interaction on the Internet, has far evolved to what it has become today: a marketing tool. (Picture Source: Marketoonist.com) There are many benefits that social media marketing can bring to businesses, such as improved brand loyalty and increased inbound traffic to websites. Review: What Do You Meanā€¦ A Professional Online Profile?

To own a professional online profile is almost de rigueur1Ā in the digital age. As I read other blogs, I gathered that the use of social media to present yourself is widely advocated for. LinkedIn, especially, is put on a pedestal, when it comes to its potential for getting people hired. The subject of relevance though, is a debatable one. Jue Yin, in her interesting guide for an online profile, mentioned ā€˜relevanceā€™ as a step in creating a professional profile. Continue reading →

What Do You Mean.. A Professional Online Profile?

Imagine yourself as a recruiter. You have received hundreds of document-based resumes. A video like this comes your way. (Video Source: Mark Leruste, Youtube) Would you shortlist Mark Leruste? I would. Reason being this short yet communicative video entertained and convinced me of his creativity and wit. Review: The Online Identity, or Identities?

Reading through the blogs, I realised that there were many different views as toĀ having one or more online identities. While there are no right or wrong viewpoints, judgement should be based on the individualā€™s motivation. Calantheaā€™s post has tweaked my stand to see another good in multiple identities. She brought up that having multiple identities (e.g. a private second Instagram account) could be meaningful. It helped her friend; living in UK, foster a more intimate bond with Calanthea. The Online Identity, or Identities?

TheĀ online identity represents you, through a collective of characteristics and interactions formed with your digital footprints. (Picture Source: Simply Zesty, 2012) Online identities, the plural, arise when a level of secrecy is wanted. It gives you full control of the information you disclose, where you can be different personas on different platforms. (Krotoski, 2012) With many social platforms available today, it is easy to create multiple identities. Continue reading →

Review on Topic 1: ā€œDigital Residentā€ VS ā€œDigital Visitorā€

It was a thought-provoking process to readĀ my classmatesā€™ posts. Especially after reading Luna’sĀ and Jasmine’sĀ posts, I find myself better able to understand myself with their visual examples, knowing which category I fall into. Digging deeper, their posts made me wonder about the pitfalls of being an extreme Digital Visitor or Resident. Continue reading →
